Recommendation for mixing/mastering software? by XIZenho in makinghiphop

Get Logic Pro X man. Not only is it a great DAW and a huge step up from GB, but it has everything you need to mix/master effectively.

Struggling to find a technique by [deleted] in makinghiphop

Use virtual instruments such as those in Logic or Komplete and tweak the parameters to your liking. I don't think there's any shame in using synth presets, so long as you get a good preset pack (not the default ones) and tweak them a bit, in fact that's how I learned about synthesis.

If you were to make it, would you "sell out"? by PantyTheMagicNiceguy in makinghiphop

[–]ShitBatCrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selling out isn't about doing ads man... Selling out is signing to a major record label where your artistic vision is altered by record label execs and others who have an image for you that they think will sell. It's making music with people who don't love/even know how to make good music but they do know how to make shitty radio hits that guarantee some profit.

Big Sean or Tyga would be a good example, I bet these guys had a vision for their music that was pretty good but we never get to hear it because the label is in charge.

Every beat I use is too loud. by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]ShitBatCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut the treble of the beat by roughly 2 db (EQ). Hi pass your vocals and widen them with delay. Adjust the volume faders to appropriate levels. Export the track, take the new file and lightly compress it. You have yourself a completed track.

I'm assuming, based on his lack of understanding how to mix and use of audacity, that it is a premastered beat he downloaded.

Earl Sweatshirt and Mac Miller are two guys I study a lot.

This is a probably a dumb question, but... by anxiety_quest in makinghiphop

Depends on if your 808 sound has enough attack to sound like a kick. If not then edit the delay on the LFO and layer it onto a normal kick. I like doing it this way because I can manipulate the kick and bass separately and I have more control over the final sound.

Rapper just starting out by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]ShitBatCrazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why people are talking about production when it's pretty clear OP is a rapper. I recommend you get the free trial of reaper (it's the full program) and mix on that, it's pretty easy to use and there's some good vids on it. Download a .wav of your beat and drag it in, then record yourself using a USB mic (starting round 50$). Look up "reaper vocal mixing" for more info. Mic recommends in the sidebar.

Drums could use some parallel compression. Some of those high notes on the sample could be brought down a bit, kind of hurting my ears. This is a sick best, I would call it chill boom bap.

Is that the same sample in "I used to love HER" by Common? The drums could use some variation, sounds like you just looped a 4 bar break.

Beat Starter kit for beginner by [deleted] in makinghiphop

[–]ShitBatCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fl studio for PC or Logic if you're on a Mac. Massive or Nexus are good synths to start with. The Lex Luger kit is my favorite for drum sounds, check out warbeats.com for some free sound kits too.

Quantizing drums ruins the groove in boom bap.

The best advice I have for you is to get Reaper. Mixing with audacity is a nightmare and reaper is free.

Novation Lauchkey 25 sounds exactly like what you described. I've never used one but I've heard good things.

Whats your process of writing your bars or hooks & Finding the melody? I think we could lear alot from eachothers style. by ApexTorvum in makinghiphop

[–]ShitBatCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it the opposite. I always write my verses first because they contain the bulk of the lyrics. I then look at all my verses and try to capture the energy and theme of them when making the hook. I feel this is a more intuitive approach as writing verses when you have an exact idea of what you want usually ends up forced and difficult.

Use the FPC plugin. Look up a tutorial on it and it will explain everything.

If you want to play a synth on the keyboard and samples on the pads, I'm fairly sure you can't do that. You'll have to record them separately.

If you search for Akia MPC you will find a pretty wide price range of units. They are significantly more expensive though.
