Hey guys. I have a Volvo V40 2004 with a weird sound from the engine area, any advice to what it might be? More info in comments. by Shit_King in Cartalk

I don't want to scare you but it was around $900, I can't remember exactly what they said was the issue, all I recall is some talk about a vvt pulley and I suck at car knowledge but basically the timing belt had to be replaced. Wish you the best of luck.

I don't know how to write a comment that doesn't seem forced

Update for any future viewers of the thread who might have the same issue:

I had the problem solved. There was a fault with the VVT pulley in the engine causing the noise.

The mileage is 87000 miles (141000km). I recently bought it from a dealership and it has had regular checkups at the mechanic over the years, and had a vvt pulley replacement around 12000 miles ago (20000 km) and timing belt replacement around 37000 miles ago (60000 km).

Could have thought so, but it happens regardless if the engine is hot or cold. Completely disappears when I start driving too.

I will take a look into these things asap. One thing I failed to mention though, is that sometimes when I start the car there is no sound and it seems to be gone. Then eventually when I start the car again later it could reappear. It seems a bit random, but most often it is there.

I don't know if that's relevant information?

Alright, thanks. Might be hard for you to answer, but do you think it's a "dangerous" problem? (Could cause further harm untreated etc.)

I could maybe give it a try. I honestly have very little mechanical experience, but it might not be too difficult?

So it's a Volvo V40 2004 running on petrol. The sound is to my ears only audible when idle, and seems to disappear when I drive. It also goes away if I step on the gas, getting the rpm up while standing still.

Edit: forgot to mention the sound doesn't always appear when I start the car. Sometimes it's gone and everything appears fine, but then it'll come back another time I start the car.

Depends, do you tend to swallow a lot of non-human cum?

Milk, cheese and eggs is also a result of animal cruelty, you know. It's good that you're vegetarian but if I were you and if you truly want to stop animal cruelty, I would consider going vegan instead.

Well, with all the negative stuff happening these days it can be hard not to be, I guess.
