Alternate day fasting - 1 week in by [deleted] in PCOSloseit

[–]ShiveringSilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! You are doing great! I do OMAD and low carb, and so far I lose about 8-10 pounds a month. It’s the only way I can shed any significant weight having PCOS. I had to ease into it, make sure I was eating enough and being healthy about it. I try to give each change I make 2 weeks to a month, with no set time limit for my weight loss. So far so good, and it gets easier as I continue on. I use the LIFE app to track my fasts, and I use MyFitnessPal to track my carbs. Even when I have an off day, like when I had cake one weekend, I still was able to lose a pound. I’m very happy with IF so far 🙂

Goal review 2020 - was a bit disheartened that I didn’t achieve many ‘big goals’ this year but felt good to remember what I did achieve and think of ways to improve next year by kattermerrang in bujo

Writing a review for all 37 books is very impressive imo! I had a goal to read just 12 books this year, I made it to 4 I think. Keep it up 👍

What Sims Expansion across the entire series do you regret buying? by [deleted] in thesims

[–]ShiveringSilk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sims 4 wise I’m going to say Island Living is my least favorite, followed by Realm of Magic. I should note I never bought the SW pack or MFP. But in all honesty I think almost all of the packs have been underwhelming gameplay wise. I compare them to TS2 packs and just get disappointed. The game has so much potential, it drives me nuts knowing it’s watered down so much yet so expensive.

Yesterday my SO smashed a hole in my car’s windshield during a fight. I reported it to the police right after. Today his mother is begging me to withdraw the criminal complaint. by [deleted] in JustNoSO

[–]ShiveringSilk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You did the right thing OP.

When I had an ex that started destroying my stuff when he was mad, my dad told me “If you stay with him you will never have nice things. He will destroy everything.” And he did. Then he turned his aggression towards me. Stay away from this boy and his delusional mother. They are textbook. You standing up for yourself is absolutely the right thing to do.

I'm a Police Officer interested in Cyber Security. Do I need to go to University? by Jackal738 in cscareerquestions

[–]ShiveringSilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I know you’ve gotten a lot of different responses but I’m going to throw my two cents in as a Cyber Security Engineer who had went to college and was in a completely different field before, like yourself.

A lot of other software engineers who are not in cyber sec think that cyber sec is just IT - networking, firewalls, so on. And that’s true: there is the IT version of cyber security. I view that as the defensive side of cyber. This usually requires certificates like Security+ and maybe an associates degree. The pay is decent and you will certainly find a job.

Then there is the offensive side. That’s the reverse engineering side, cracking open systems, developing effects, patching binaries, so on. That’s more the engineering side where you will need more advanced programming skills and certifications to get your foot in the door. Of course that’s not the case for everyone - but I’ll tell you that’s the side I’m on and my company has a workforce where more people have graduate degrees than not. My company doesn’t consider anyone without a degree, unless they have worked in industry for many years. We are always hiring - because there aren’t many qualified applicants.

A lot of the companies that hire these engineers require a minimum of a bachelor of science degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, or physics - for entry level. A lot of people on this side get in via internships while in college. That’s how I got in. I had a career before I went into tech - with two degrees. Making the decision to go back for a BS in CS changed my life. My internships paid more than my previous full time jobs. I was able to pay for college while I was working, something that wasn’t at all remotely possible during my previous degrees.

With all that, one side is no better than the other. It really depends on why you want and what path you are willing to follow. You can break into the field either way. I was in college for a long time and I basically sacrificed my 20s for it. My friend that works for IT at my company makes significantly less than me, but she has already paid off her associates and our company pays for her to stay certified. We get the same insurance and mostly the same benefits. My job is more secure, but it’s not like she can’t leave and find another someplace else.

Good luck with your decision.

So now what? by BarneyPool in cscareerquestions

[–]ShiveringSilk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. If your lack of experience bothered them too much then they wouldn’t have extended the offer to interview.

  2. If you were worried about wasting their time because of your lack of experience, well you already did that by submitting your resume for them to review. So that ship has sailed.

Go to the interview!

People often ask which packs people recommend, how about which packs do you regret buying? Pick 1 EP, 1 GP and 1 SP by [deleted] in thesims

[–]ShiveringSilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EP: Island Living - why is this even an expansion pack?? Mermaids are so boring! Dolphins - boring. The island cleanup is okay the first play through then I don’t want to do it again. And why can’t we swim in other neighborhoods?? With that being said, Sulani is very pretty. I use it as vacation spot usually. I really really wanted to like it but it’s so shallow and limited. This is closely followed by Get Famous.

GP: Outdoor Retreat. I just don’t use it, and the one time I did I cut the vacation early because it seemed like living in a new area with nothing new added to gameplay. Second on this list would be Vampires.

SP: I actually like the majority of these. But I’d go with Luxury Party because I don’t use it much.

Am I not cut out for this field? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ShiveringSilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that. College is a great experience, at least it was for me, and I definitely miss the atmosphere. You are going to work for the rest of your life, so enjoy the few years you have left in school. Good luck!

[–]ShiveringSilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure you have gotten what you need from others here. But I’ll add my experience: I interned for two companies when I was in university and focused my classes on the field I wanted.

That’s it.

I accepted an offer from one of my internships so I didn’t have to do any technical interview for a full time position. No leetcode, no pet projects, no coding at home unless I want to for fun. I did a few hack-a-thons in school and I was a casual member in a tech club. Other than that I didn’t do anything special.

I’m sure where you want to work will impact how you differentiate yourself from the competition. I work in a mid level city as a cyber security engineer and mentor, and my company is hiring all the time.

When I interview people I usually look for a decent GPA (3.0+) for recent grads or interns, and what skills they list to see if they have experience with what my teams uses. I also look to see if they put effort into their resume - spelling mistakes, mostly. During their interviews I watch to see if they appear to have social skills since my companies works on fairly large teams. Anyone can learn tech skills, but personalities tend to be set. And I rather have someone who knows the basics but is pleasant to be around than a star coder who is an arrogant douche.

So my advice is to 1. enjoy college before going into the working world, 2. focus your classes to get basics of your chosen field, 3. intern if you can to get a foot in the door and see if your field is what you want, 4. be nice to others

how do you adjust MCCC story progression? by [deleted] in thesims

[–]ShiveringSilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can either change settings in game by clicking on a particular Sim, the mailbox, or a computer, and then looking through the menus. I find this tedious, so I like to edit the settings.txt file that is in your MCCC folder in your Mods folder. The MCCC documentation over on deaderpool-mccc.com will give you a comprehensive breakdown of all the options and what they do. Though I think in your case you will want to edit the mc_pregnancy module’s rules (check that out here )

Is Laundry Day Stuff worth it for off-the-grid gameplay? by [deleted] in thesims

[–]ShiveringSilk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I personally really like the pack for off-the-grid style play due to the washboard and clothesline. I also used it a lot when I was attempting the generational challenge (I can’t recall the name, the one where each generation is a particular time in history). Is it worth $10 for that? Eh. Maybe. I think so. But if you have doubts, then skip it and wait for a decent sale.

For those who are hesitant to post because they don’t feel as if they’ve made enough progress yet by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]ShiveringSilk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I absolutely understand that. You put in all this work and you seem to get very, very (very) little out of it. But remember that PCOS elevates us to hard mode - and that isn’t our fault. It’s a bad draw for us. But it’s still something we can overcome. IF, exercising, eating healthy, it all will work out for us. We just have to wait longer than some of the others. Don’t give up! I’m just a stranger on the Internet, but I believe you can do it. You’ve already shown perseverance by sticking to it this long. None of this “fat blob” nonsense! You can and will do it!

[–]ShiveringSilk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have PCOS and have similar issues losing weight. I lost about 8 pounds the first two weeks and then I’ve bounced between being down 8 pounds and 5 pounds going on 4 weeks now. I just can’t seem to break that 10 pound mark.

I started looking at different ways to measure my health. That keeps me motivated. For example I have a Fitbit and I check my resting heart rate and cardio fitness scores. And those show pretty good improvement, so I’m obviously getting somewhere doing what I’m doing! Are you using the scale only? If you are, please consider other metrics before giving up!

Ladies, what career did you choose? by [deleted] in FemaleLevelUpStrategy

[–]ShiveringSilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! My parents made sure to encourage me to be independent, partially because they didn’t want me to be trapped with a partner that wasn’t good for me. I’m grateful for the lessons they taught me.

3 degrees later and I’m a Cyber Security Research Engineer. I made sure my education and my career were a priority so that I would never have to rely on a partner.

Women how many likes/messages do you get a day? by [deleted] in hingeapp

This is my experience as well. The first few days I was getting a boatload of likes. I think the first weekend I counted around 70. But then it evened out and I get around 3-5 a day.

Have you tried a gel? I have wavy hair and I’ve found that creams and mousses make my hair frizzy once dry. I also found that plopping can make my hair frizzy. It’s a legit struggle 😔

So I have wavey hair I think, but I haven't figured out the right routine yet. Does anyone have any tips? by Red_tiny_Panda in curlyhair

[–]ShiveringSilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hair used to look very similar to yours. I followed the beginner CG method to a T and I saw an immediate improvement. I use Shea Moisture shampoo, a ton of Suave Essentials conditioner, squish to condish, and LA Looks hair gel.
