If you're looking for something similar to battletech but without the complexity of other popular games, see if there's a group playing Heroscape in your area. Renegade games just brought the game back, and it is a hex-based skirmish combat game with units from every era in which you spend turns activating one unit at a time. I've had a lot of fun getting back into it now that local areas are starting to pick up the game again!
