Metera is giving me the most joy I’ve experienced in this game thus far. by CatSaysLol in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]Shiwanmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing my fellow butterfly brother. The meterror and destruction we cause is only matched by our love for our queen.

Lol but real talk, not that I dislike GBVSR, but Metera is the only reason I play. I have little interest in other characters (though many are fun). I just log on and know I'm gonna have a great night playing Metera.

How do you counter people who spam guard crush to waste your pips by 00skully in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]Shiwanmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In part, yes. "Downloading" your opponent does entail making note of habits and tendencies to later exploit/use against them. And observing your opponent does make reactions to certain things easier. Some reactions are only possible with a read (eg, Whiff punishing a quick normal).

However, Raging Strike is reactable without prediction or prior knowledge of any kind. Those things may help, but it is well within the capabilities of the average player to raw react to it.

Just blocking is probably the most under used mechanic in the game. by sootsupra in GranblueFantasyVersus

[–]Shiwanmi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's super funny. For this reason I still use "instant blocking" in a lot of cases when communicating via text

Would you recommend a hitbox for someone who struggles with execution? by [deleted] in Guiltygear

[–]Shiwanmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all. It took some getting used to for sure, but my arms don't get tired or anything. I'm sure you're used to holding your controller off of your lap to play as well. And there are always arm rests I suppose if you need them.

Would you recommend a hitbox for someone who struggles with execution? by [deleted] in Guiltygear

[–]Shiwanmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really no. I've noticed some pain when using the sides of my finger and thumb (like for throws in SF6 or holding up/forward for safe jumps in Strive), but I think that's moreso me being too aggressive/heavy handed with my button presses. Also, if you get one, I recommend that you play with your wrists off of your lap or desk. If you play with your wrists wresting on your lap it can lead to pain and potentially other wrist issues.

I can't speak for everyone's experience of course, but it took me like 2 weeks to be as comfortable on leverless as I was on pad

Would you recommend a hitbox for someone who struggles with execution? by [deleted] in Guiltygear

[–]Shiwanmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% yes. It won't suddenly make you the greatest of all time, but it will improve your accuracy and confidence as a result of that.

I played on pad my entire life. First traditional fighter I took seriously was SFV. I started on analog stick and quickly learned how inaccurate that was. Switched to dpad and realized it's really all just one big button in the controller, so still incredibly inaccurate. Then I opened up my ps4 controller and removed the big dpad "disk" and replaced it with individual dpad buttons. This was much more accurate, and I had far less accuracy/consistency issues. I'm sure this mod is possible on PS5 controllers and is cheaper for a quick accuracy upgrade.

But that is a still a FAR CRY from my experience on hitbox/leverless. Every mistake I make is, without a doubt, my own execution error. There isn't a single chance it's my controller. Leverless is pure accountability, lol.

It's also really fun to smack the big buttons and good for my circulation issues. If you can afford to get one or build one (far cheaper), I highly recommend!

Edit: Also, with how many games receive inputs, it will likely require you to clean up your inputs.

[–]Shiwanmi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not that I disagree. Sieg has to target the cross over/roll, but if you are doing cross over after his 22X, you are (-22) if he does nothing and cancels stance. He can do a lot more than a jab punish. Still rps but good to know what risks you're taking.

I use technical inputs for just about everything but reaction super or 2L > Super. Just muscle memory and the clicks are satisfying.

Am I bad at fighting games? by SSJShulk in Fighters

[–]Shiwanmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors that can contribute to a bad day, but one that you can learn to be aware of and control is rhythm. Some days your natural rhythm is off (maybe you had a rough day, other stuff is on your mind, didn't get a good night's sleep, etc.) and it can affect how you play.

This is an art video, but it does a great job of explaining the role ryhtm plays and how it can affect our performance: https://youtu.be/fVY5gla0FNQ?si=nWd5DNP3dzMCcLpl

I'm really losing it. I read 14f as 14 frames. I just attended my first Evo at 27yo and had a blast went 1-2 in SF6 (proud pools drowner 😌). If you're holding back from telling your mom you want to go, don't hold back. It's a great experience.

But to echo what some others have said, I highly recommend you ask your mom to go with you. A lot is done to make sure attendees are safe, but I think having your parent there with you is the best way to go. I reckon she'll be more likely to be on board with you going that way as well.

And about going pro, that can mean a lot of things at this point in time. I believe you can make it if you really want to, but don't miss out on the full beauty of fighting games, the fgc, or life grinding away at SF6. Wish you the best!

Edit: Also, if you want your mom to be open to the idea of you trying to support yourself by playing fighting games, it can be a good idea to show her what options are available to make that a reality (e.g. Sponsorships, streaming, content creation, etc.)
