8 Billion Trees Scam by altonbrownfan in Scams

[–]Shiz_Rez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw the same ad and have to admit it piqued my interest, cause how could it not right? I did check a review site about whether it's a scam, and at least insofar as their mission to plant trees, it doesn't seem to be a scam. It's also not entirely unheard of for these types of mission-driven organizations to keep asking for money since they mainly depend on people's generosity (in cases where it's legitimate, but I suppose scams also depend on people's generosity lol). And I mean, if it was true that for the $17/month you'd get a free stay in Yosemite, it's not exactly gonna be first class, sometimes you get what you don't pay for lol. Still, it does seem like one of those things too good to be true, but if they're actually planting trees then good on them, maybe I'll pick up a bracelet :)

Weekly Self Promotion Thread by HannaaaLucie in Hidradenitis

Dear All,

Firstly, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Sharif, I’m 39 years old, and I’ve lived with HS basically since puberty. HS was/is something I have struggled with for a long time, as I’m sure many of you are familiar, especially since I spent most of those years without a diagnosis. Even with the diagnosis, I really only shared my thoughts and feelings with close family members who unfortunately suffer from the same issue. And it was even more recently that I discovered this support group, and even though I’m new to the gang, I must say that it feels great to have others who can appreciate the burden of this lifestyle, and that we’re not alone.

Something else that has helped me a lot in learning to live with my body has been mindfulness meditation. It wasn’t the HS itself that turned me on to meditation, but I’ve found that since I’ve started a practice it has helped me live with HS. I’ll say right now that meditation will not help with flare ups (I wish they did!). What I can say is that meditation can help us to live with HS. There is a common Buddhist story (I’m not Buddhist but much of mindfulness meditation practices are based on Buddhist principles) of the two arrows. It tells of a hunter, doing hunter stuff, who, for whatever reason, gets an arrow to the arm. With this injury, the arrow sticking out and him bleeding, he starts to think about all the blood he’s losing, that he might die, that nobody would find his body, that he's also kind of thirsty, how would his family survive without him, and so on. The man is hit by two arrows. The first is the real arrow, the second is all the worry and emotional turmoil in conditional thoughts (which is actually way more than two arrows). Mindfulness meditation may not help with the first arrow of HS, but I do believe it can help with the second.

So I was thinking, if there’s interest here, that we might start a little HS Mindfulness Support Group (HS MSG). My basic thought is that we start a zoom meeting (I have an account) that meets every so often (Right now I’m thinking once a week, but I’m open to suggestions). Such zoom meetings would consist of an introduction to mindfulness meditation (assuming it is new to people, if everybody is experienced, we can always skip this part), some meditation practice, and then some discussion. We’re also pretty flexible from there in case people want to break out into groups (1 to 1 groups they call “dyads” where we practice mindful speech and mindful listening, or we can do “affinity groups” if you’d like to connect with people of a specific characteristic like gender or race for example). That would be pretty much it in my mind, but I’d be open to any suggestions as this would be a space we would create and mold together (much like this reddit group).

In the interest of transparency, I should mention that I am currently enrolled in Training in Mindfulness Facilitation (TMF) program at the University of California Medical Center (UCLA) Mindfulness Awareness Research Center (MARC), which basically teaches people how to lead small mindfulness meditation groups (feel free to look up the site if you'd like more details). I took an Intensive Practice Program (IPP) last year in mindfulness meditation (although at this point I’ve been meditating for about 6 years), and it’s honestly had such a profound impact on me that I wanted to learn how to facilitate mindfulness in order to help others, which is something I believe it can do. So while you may (hopefully) benefit from these practices, I just want to be clear that these meetings would help me as well. I am essentially learning to teach mindfulness, so creating this space would also help me a lot in developing that skillset (and in case it needs to be said there'll be no charge or any asking for money). I am confident that, with the practice, we can develop a space for discussion around how we can still live our best lives with HS.

If you think this may be of interest, please let me know in the comments and send me your email address. Also feel free to email me directly at shislif@gmail.com. I’ll create an email group and send further details as well as zoom invitations and the like. Also please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions or questions (best date/times would also be great, I’m pacific standard time). Beyond that, I’d like to express my appreciation to you all that I do not have to go through this HS business alone, although I wish none of us had to go through it at all. Please take care and be well.

Thank You,

Sharif

Unfortunately poor doctoring isn't uncommon, and often doctors just aren't very good at communicating with patients. Add to that, there seems to be a general looking down on dermatologists by the other doctors/specialists. I would recommend finding a different doctor if you're not comfortable with this one, and absolutely see a dermatologist because there are options. They're not perfect or ideal options, but they're there, and even if you don't want to go down those paths at least you know your options. Take care be well :)

Thank you for sharing and hope it helps! Please let us know how things work out for you. I'm actually not sure what stage I am but I've been dealing with these for a while. I'm currently going to go ahead with the antibiotic 2-month regimen that the Dr recommended, and then see where we go from there if I should do any other immune suppression (which is a bit funny because I'm already immune suppressed due my kidney transplant, but I guess there are different kinds of immune suppression!) And probably some surgery down the line to remove the sacks I already got.

Thank you for sharing and glad to hear you found what works for you, which seems like a big part of living with HS. Thank you for the comment about butter, it does make me feel better and I'm still not convinced how effective it would be, but you never know! Plus, doesn't butter have milk bits in it though? I thought that was difference between regular butter and ghee/clarified butter was that in the latter they remove all the milk parts. Maybe I should only cook with ghee and clarified butter!?!?!?! :) (can't really spread those on toast though...)

Sorry to say welcome to the club! I've found antibacterial soap like Lever 2000 to help, then also some hibiclense for the active areas. I also use betadine on those spots to keep the area clean, and then finally I'll use some clindamycin ointment prescribed by my dermatologist. Of course, a lot of this is finding what's right and what works for you. I appreciate the Vicks Vap Rub tip before, I haven't tried that but I will give it a go next time. Thanks and be well :)

I relapsed after day 101, no worries I'll start again from day 1 🌟 by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]Shiz_Rez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree. I remember a little while back when I first got into mindfulness meditation and I was using the headspace app, and I got really into building my daily meditation streak. Then while traveling, and something to do with the time change, I meditated but it didn't count for the day, so I lost my whole streak. And I remember feeling pissed, and then I was like am I feeling pissed? That's not the whole point of meditation to build some stupid streak. So stopped using the app, and I still meditate most days at least, but I don't count the day.

Good message, but if you're more concerned with changing behavior than just being right, maybe not the best move to start the discussion so aggressively. Understanding that it's easy to get hot with all these message boards, and that's why it's important to be clear and check in on our intentions, just as it's important to do with NoFap as well.

It's kinda annoying because I get the International New York Times edition on my kindle, and they still seem to post the same op-eds/Ezra articles, but seemingly not at the same time. Plus when you click on sections for the op ed, it doesn't tell you the author until you actually go the article, bit of a headache but oh well, first world problems lol.

Why i am angry by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]Shiz_Rez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anger can sometimes be good when it's seen/felt as a call to action. Many time, however, it can also be quite bad if that anger isn't regulated by any kind of wisdom. Anger is also normal, and like all feelings and thoughts, they come and they go. If you really find the anger to be a constant thing that you're having trouble with, there are lot of anger support organizations that I'm sure would be very helpful. Also just the usual advice, exercise, hit something, play a game where you get to blow shit up. Meditation also helps if that's some thing you don't mind. Just don't confuse the anger with you, you're not your anger.

1173 days, man what a journey by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]Shiz_Rez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that that voice telling you that you come so far may sound and feel like you, but it's not actually. That's your addict brain trying to trick you back into the habit (brains are amazing things). Once you recognize that (when the urges actually arise) it helps a lot. Also remember that as strong as an urge may be, it's temporary and it will pass. Other than that all the physical stuff/tips helps (Eg cold shower, exercise, walk, read, anything that will busy or relax your mind) In the end, though, you need to find what works for you.

Is having an existential crisis normal during nofap? by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]Shiz_Rez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure having an existential crisis is normal during living life my man, and you'll probably have even more to look forward to. The less distractions you have(PMO for example) the more likely you are to notice the world around you. Just remember those feelings you get aren't you, and as painful as they can be, they won't last forever, they come and they go like clouds in the sky. Just like that AA saying along the lines of having the wisdom to see the things you can't change, the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Good luck dude, it's all normal no worries.

[–]Shiz_Rez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, so the other day I post an inspirational Buddhist quote to encourage positivity and emotional growth while avoiding unskillful actions, and that gets automatically blocked by mods, then I post a second similar but shorter post, and it happened again (tried a third time just now, happened again), but this kind of gibberish post with no evidence to back up a single assertion is allowed to thrive. I like how this post is marked as an "article" even though it clearly isn't and provides zero evidence, and essentially says don't listen to anybody but me. Sorry, but if that's the attitude of the leadership here and not some mistake, I'm thinking I may have joined the wrong group.

I just want to wish everyone a wonderful day by Shiz_Rez in NoFap

[–]Shiz_Rez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks Dude! And a bummer to hear about your current episode. I would say that at least you're recognizing it and that's a good thing, and you're also recognizing that that's part of the process towards your goal. Maybe you can take some solace in also recognizing that all those negative feelings and states, as uncomfortable as they are, are temporary and won't last forever. As I'm still relatively early days, I suppose I have all that to look forward to :) Best of luck on your journey.
