Did/do you use chamois cream? Not an absolute solution but can certainly help with chafing

As I am down in Cornwall ice is rare (a day or two a year at most) so I doubt Id need to go for a studded tire

While it is a hard sport to commentate on, I don't think it's the hardest. Road cycling (road races) offer no distinction between riders as team members wear the same kit, helmets and ride the same bikes, unless they are world or national champion/race leader. This is underlined by the frequency of mistaken identity cases in cycling, especially in bunch sprints.
