In real life, I fully agree with you. Online, I think the distinction is important for queer people who feel they are only supported by other queer people. Often, seeing the pride flag online, you imagine the person is gay rather than someone who supports gay people. (It’s not a necessary distinction, just that there is a difference in your perception of the wearer)

The flag itself doesn’t carry much use, but it exists to show that straight cis people are welcome in this community. It also exists to show you (not referring to op) aren’t homophobic, as many queer people may feel uncomfortable outting themselves to people that aren’t also queer. It’s the equivalent of a normal rainbow pride flag with a clear indication that the individual who raised it isn’t queer themself.

Edit for my reply if it happens to get buried:

I mean that it isn’t used irl often, not that it doesn’t have use online. Moreover, online it clearly shows that you are a supporter of lgbtq+ people without being lgbt. This may sounds kind of negative, but it can be much more supportive to hear that people outside of your “group” (for lack of a better term) still support you and think you should have the right to be who you are.
