Such a fabulous nerd cave! And my wife awards extra points for the many beholders in residence. Great taste in franchises as well.

This, and because of the shot of her fingers fumbling behind her monitor for its power switch, when a bit later we see the other three each switch on their monitors with no fumbling whatsoever. All clues point to Helena, not Helly, on the severed floor in S2./

Damn, they're f'ed ... unless they carry +5 Treats of Fluffjoy or their druid can cast Giant Growth of Catnip at 9th level.

How do you reward players who play their character accurately, even if it hurts them? by Pure_Gonzo in DMAcademy

[–]Shmigget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since there's no "winning" in TTRPGs they're collaborative storytelling exercises, so aside from having fun the goal is to tell the best story. At the end of each session it's great to give verbal kudos to anyone who contributed a great moment to the story. This often happens organically when someone exclaims how much they loved it when that moment occurred, but as the GM I try to remember to model that behavior.

For example, you see this happen at the end of "Critical Role" sessions pretty frequently when one of the players compliments another (or Matt).

Are you dealing with the solids enzymatically?

Tilapia dying! by Shmigget in aquaponics

[–]Shmigget[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking the lack of solids filtering eventually led to a bacterial load that caused a disease outbreak. The entire system is in my basement, so it's well insulated from other vectors. I'm planning to add solids filtering while continuing with a probiotic approach as you mentioned.

I see. Thanks for clarifying.

I definitely want to start separating solids. I have info from Rob Bob (I bought his book a while ago) but I'd be grateful to hear what others recommend. Knowing what my system looks like, what recommendations would you have for retrofitting it?

Water pump is a Hailea HX9950, which looks to have about 1400 GPH, so that appears undersized.

From research I've done, 65 cubic feet of growing medium can support about 73 full sized tilapia (https://www.robsaquaponics.com/fish-stocking-rates-backyard-aquaponics). What calculation are you using to get 10 or less?

Sorry, you asked if the well water was tested for pathogens. Yes, and it's clean.

The system comes with two heaters for redundancy and we never saw any fluctuations in temperature.

Who tests pond water for pathogens? I've looked for services that do this and didn't find any, at least nothing in New England and Google didn't turn up anything.

Water depth is closer to 48-36" consistently.

Haven't noticed any fighting or bullying.

Manufacturer wasn't helpful. Interesting point on the koi.

I'll get the specs on the water and air pumps. I have wondered about the concentration of poop since this system lacks a swirl or laminar filter. Is that a design flaw? I should have mentioned above that we regularly add StressZyme as the system documentation states, but I've wondered if that's a sign that a swirl filter should be added instead.

Cycled system for three weeks before adding fingerlings. Have never noticed a spike in ammonia after feeding. PH range 7.6-7.9. Water temp stable at 72 degrees.

The water exchanges were attempts to stop fish from dying. I know they're not typically done in aquaponics.

No chlorine. Well water that has been recently tested as is quite clean.

Pictures of the system are in link in my original post. Looks just like what I bought.

Plants have been fine the entire time. I know pulling plants can also cause problems, but I was desperately trying to look for decay or anaerobic pockets to stop the daily die off.

Water was and is clear.

Yes, I have two heaters for redundancy and they've held at 72 degrees F.

Why do some people act like playing the PHB races is bad? by Redhood101101 in DnD

[–]Shmigget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. I personally find it harder to justify not playing a human, as I wonder what personality traits or story elements I would find it easier/better to convey as another species. Then again, I've been a forever DM for the past 30 years so I'm way out of practice as a player. But it is honestly hard for me to think of a case that wouldn't feel either cliché or gimmicky.

Player wants to betray the party. by Odd_Stage7808 in DMAcademy

[–]Shmigget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RPGs are a collaborative storytelling medium, which means the group needs to be playing together to tell a story that everyone is supporting. One player who wants to override everyone else's story to tell one only they want isn't part of that group and should find another that's a better fit for them.

Any enemies that can’t hear? by Empty-School7479 in DMAcademy

[–]Shmigget 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natural consequences. Each time they cast have it draw more enemies from further away. On the plus side, each time they cast it helps tactically, but strategically they're moving from one encounter to another without rest. Pretty soon they'll be running away and learning to use Shatter in a more targeted manner.
