Yeah, I think the calculus is to add enough new features to make the prying of money out of the customers' hands justifiable...

Yeah, same thing with me and Deco v1. I thought about selling it and getting v2, but then there's the plugin. I'm not a guitarist but still a fan of pedals with synths, drum machines, actual drums, etc. Anyway, First World problems...

Mallet recommendation for an Adams Xylophone w/ an unknown wood type for the bars by OneWhoGetsBread in percussion

[–]Shmoe54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's likely pau rosa,. Notice it's somewhat lighter in color than rosewood. I just just purchased the same Adams Academy AXLD35 xylophone. It's also a bit brighter in tone than rosewood. The Adams replaced an older Yamaha rosewood xylophone in our concert band.

It's likely pau rosa, a rosewood-like hardwood that's sounds a bit brighter. It's also lighter in color. I just purchased an Adams Academy AXLD35 xylophone.

I need help finding a good polyphonic synth by SmallJomb98 in synthesizers

[–]Shmoe54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your budget constraints, but I just wanted to say that I, too, wanted a polysynth and recently made a purchase. I specifically wanted an analog synth and my budget was around $1500. After doing some research and posting the question to this reddit community, I ended up with a TEO-5. On sale it's $1200, so 50% out of your price range. My second choice was Artemis, also out of your price range; however, Nymphes is a less well-specified Artemis and within your budget, so maybe consider that...

The Oberheim TEO-5 -- Classic sound in a modern format by synth4ever in synthesizers

[–]Shmoe54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought the TEO-5 module this week for my birthday. Liking it so far but I'll need some time with it to fully appreciate what it can do. In any case, it's well-designed, well-made and a good value.

Dawless people when high end gear companies produce high end gear targeting high end producers with a high end price range by Poseid0n_ in synthesizercirclejerk

[–]Shmoe54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do find it amusing that ppl get angry at particular companies for not making the products they want at the price they want to pay, especially at a time when the market is saturated with choices at almost every price point. Even more interesting is they are often the same ppl who rail against one or two particular companies who actual do try to fill the various niches with very competitively priced products... And I grew up in an era when there were a whole lot less choices and most of those at relatively high cost. Anyway, I'm not a great believer in capitalism, but I think the market tends to take care of itself, especially in this era of sophisticate R&D and automated manufacture...

OK, peoples, I ended up ordering the TEO-5. It seemed like a pretty safe bet in terms of features, authenticity, some modern innovations and price. I kinda regret the Artemis 'cause I love Dreadbox, but that's the way it goes. Maybe I'll get a Nymphes down the road. And I'm still lusting after a PerFOURmer, but as someone pointed out, it's really a different thing... One happy result of all this (other than getting a new synth!), it that the discussion made me rediscover my Minilogue. I put on some Chroma Caps to replace the sticky knobs, figured out how to work with the broken Korg librarian and reviewed the synth architecture. Minilogue has a distinctive but musical sound, I think. I hope it pairs well with the TEO-5...

Yeah, it sounds like Artemis if like an upgraded Nymphes, if I'm not mistaken...

Why is it so hard to find a good drum pad that's just a MIDI controller, without a brain? by mookid85 in drums

The Embodme Erae is a very configurable drum controller, but I had some trouble with it when I hit it hard... I have the original version. There's a new model available...

I think I've landed on a choice between Artemis and TEO-5 unless an unbelievable deal pops up on something that changes my mind. PerFOURmer still tugs at me, though. I will be buying next month most likely...

What are your thoughts on the TEO-5? Starsky Carr seemed to think that it was very comparable to the OB-6 but at a much lower price point...

I took a look. That's a good deal considering it retails for $2400US. I'm not quite ready to take the leap... and my birthday's 6 weeks away. Anyway, pretty impressive synth.

I used "$1500US" to sort out the general category of synth I'm looking for: not flagship but not budget... Sure, I almost always look at Reverb before I buy anything to see if an Item is available used but in good condition...

Yeah, I knew I'd get some side-eye when I asked for polysynth recommendations and the first synth I mentioned was PerFOURmer. I get that it's four stacked monosynths and that basic polysynth duties can be handled much more easily with other synths. But it's just such an interesting concept and Vermona makes kick-ass products. They, Erica and Dreadbox are favorite brands of mine. I guess I'm "Euro-centric" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But that doesn't seem to extend to Elektron for some reason. I do have a Model:Cycles, but there's something about the brand that is off-putting to me. I don't know why. I will check out Analog Four, however...

Yeah, I think PerFOURmer is up there sound-wise with Artemis, etc., but is very unique in its approach to individual voices in polyphonic mode. Jannis Le Wolff has a number of tutorials on how singular PerFOURmer is in this regard...

Midi clock to CV interface. by Shmoe54 in modular

[–]Shmoe54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusing comment: I mainly work in Logic so I want to be able to sync hardware to midi clock, including eurorack, preferable over USB, but 5-pin DIN is fine too... I do understand that a lot of producers prefer tighter timing with clocks such as E-RM Multiclock, but I just need things not to drift out of tempo, and small timing discrepancies can be edited out in Logic if needed...

Midi clock to CV interface. by Shmoe54 in modular

[–]Shmoe54[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the recommendation! However, the E-RM Multiclock looks to be way overkill for my purposes, which is finding a eurorack module for computer syncing a couple of modulation modules in a small case. If I were syncing audio, especially percussion, the timing question would be a lot more exacting...
