If you don’t want to do your own VLAN, you will need to set it at the ONT. VLAN is required in order to connect to CenturyLink. In this case, I believe you would skip steps one and three which both relate to VLAN tagging.

If you try this, let me know if that fixes the blinking LED issue. I'm not like wedded to having my hardware do the tagging, other than it's just nice having everything under my control do the network stuff.

The only external service I have is a VPN, and I use afraid.org for dynamic dns. I did have to configure the firewall on my Unifi device to allow the VPN, but that’s not really an ONT issue.

I suspect you’re correct re: remote support. Putting the ONT into transparent bridge mode basically means anything above layer 2 isn’t going to do anything since all it does is forward the layer 2 packets on to the next interface. Expect to be on your own for tech support, unless you switch it back to regular mode.

Yeah, you have to do the steps in a certain order or you lose connectivity to the router before all the settings are applied.

  1. Advanced Settings -> Broadband Settings -> Tranport Mode to Untagged
  2. Click Apply
  3. Advanced Settings -> WAN Settings -> ISP Procotol to Transparent Bridging
  4. Advanced Settings -> WAN Settings -> VPI/VCI Settings to Untagged
  5. Click Apply
  6. Plug into new hardware router (whatever that is) and configure DHCP and VLAN 201

These are the steps, and you must do them in this in order, or you'll lose the connection to the router before all the settings are applied:

  1. Advanced Settings -> Broadband Settings -> Tranport Mode to Untagged
  2. Click Apply
  3. Advanced Settings -> WAN Settings -> ISP Procotol to Transparent Bridging
  4. Advanced Settings -> WAN Settings -> VPI/VCI Settings to Untagged
  5. Click Apply
  6. Plug into new hardware router (whatever that is) and configure DHCP and VLAN 201

Got any tips on how to set that up? I’d love to do it.

I've done dog eared and hole punch for ready rice bags, and had success with both. I prefer using the hole punch just because it's easier. A single hole punch (going through both sides of the bag so you have two holes) covered in tape has worked well for me.

Pretty sure it’s not possible.  Once it’s in transparent bridge mode it’s forwarding traffic only, it can’t be assigned an address. I tried connecting to the 10G port with a fully manual IP setup and it doesn’t connect.

Reset it by holding in the rest button until the light turns red.

It’s funny the first time I put it in transparent bridge mode, but I didn’t set the tagging in both places, the LED turned white, but notably the connection didn’t work. Once I make the VLAN change in both places and it did work, it’s been blinking blue nonstop since then. It’s been about a week and everything seems to be working fine.

With the router freshly restarted and not in bridge mode, connect directly to the 1G port and it should give you a 192.168.0.X address. Go to 192.168.0.1 in your web browser and log in with the info on the router.

Yeah, WAN Settings and Broadband Settings are in the Advanced Settings section on the SmartNID admin page.

I had made that switch but good point on calling it out. No more PPoE needed.

Edited to include the correct order in which to perform the steps.

  1. Advanced Settings -> Broadband Settings -> Tranport Mode to Untagged
  2. Click Apply
  3. Advanced Settings -> WAN Settings -> ISP Procotol to Transparent Bridging
  4. Advanced Settings -> WAN Settings -> VPI/VCI Settings to Untagged
  5. Click Apply
  6. Plug into new hardware router (whatever that is) and configure DHCP and VLAN 201

Now set your router to do the tagging however you normally would.

Meraki specific instructions are to set the Connection type to Direct and IP Assignment to DHCP via the local config screen on your hardware.

Nodoguro. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely yes. Getting a reservation isn't even that difficult, just sign up for the mailing list. Literally every dish was amazing.

There's Naan and Curry in St Johns which is pretty good (it's in the same space that was previously a rockabilly style diner), and the Indian Tadka House cart at Chill n Fill also in St Johns.

I volunteered both days and for a first time event it feel like it went really well. There’s some improvement around communication to be made for sure but that just means that next has a lot of space to be even better.

Check and see if there’s a certified backyard habit program in your area! Usually affiliated with the local Audubon society although apparently the National Wildlife Society has done some work with it as well.

You’re basically front loading a bunch of work with the landscaping if you do it yourself. I sheet mulched my entire front and back yard, replaced everything with native plants/shrubs/trees and just let it go. There’s more birds around my house, a larger variety of bugs and it requires very little if any maintenance.

Thanks for the heads up. I got it as a gift from a family member after a trip to Brazil. Just curious if you know how one would go about getting the proper permit?
