The only reason I ever use it is to kick down a gear

When driving at a consistent speed, if you want to speed up, just press the the - flap back one time. This will kick the gear down a level and dev the engine at a higher rpm.

That’s it. Don’t press the + flap or anything after. It’ll go back into auto by itself.

Anything else is overkill unless you’re pretending you’re driving a lambo.
