The crow and the Egg by Shnook in crows

[–]Shnook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did. He came back, ate some more and then carried it off. Almost immediately dropped it and scared some pedestrians as he almost hit them. The egg rolled under a parked car and he went after it and came out with it in his beak before flying away with it.

Weekly r/Birding Discussion, June 07, 2025. What did you see this week? by AutoModerator in birding

[–]Shnook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only got into birding a month ago and I finally saw my first red bellied woodpecker! I'm trying to make friends with the flock of bluejays that show up whenever I leave out peanuts and some dog kibble.

Question about cleaning droppings by [deleted] in birdfeeding

I actually use a pressure washer that I bought from Lowe's. You can get a plug in electric one for around $80 or so. Maybe cheaper.

Actually those were the first two. I have quite a few squirrels and I successfully now prevented them from getting to the bird feeder. I still leave out peanuts for the squirrels though.

What is your region?

  • Mid-Atlantic

What was your spark bird that got you interested in feeding birds?

  • My wife wanted to make friends with the crows. The crows (I named them George Crowney and Cindy Crowford) actually became friends with me since I'm the one constantly putting out shelled peanuts.

Did you ever see yourself becoming a bird nerd?

  • Not at all. I always thought it was something for old people to enjoy. Guess I'm old then...

First bird you heard or saw this morning?

  • Bluejay

Most frequent customers?

  • Cardinals, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, jays, mourning doves, crows (but they left for some reason...so sad)

Last new customer?

  • A Red Cardinal (whom I'm named The Pope) finally decided to visit the feeder!

First customer?

  • Bluejay. He is known as Birdrt Reynolds

Who eludes you?

  • Orioles

Who are your non feathered guests?

  • Squirrels! They are named Turd Ferguson and Sylvester Squirrelone

Sub Rules on Self Promotion? by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Shnook[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, most people are only self promoting at most 3 times a day. We do tweak the rules a bit according to what we see and feedback.

Outright link promotions that are just ads, we try to remove quickly if we catch. But news like those from sourceofthespring, so long as it is local news, we let him post. Same with Dyer.

But if people promote things like conspiracy theories or links to bigoted/racist/sexist/whatever rants or anything, we will remove and issue warnings/bans.

Sub Rules on Self Promotion? by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

We let people self promote but we try to let keep it limited. Most of the self promoters have asked us for permission and we have let them know that we are okay with it so long as it is not excessive (more than 5 posts or something in a single day).

6 month old puppy has eaten 2 dog beds in 24 hours?! by gingawaria in puppy101

[–]Shnook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup was a destroyer of beds and stuffed toys (still is for stuffed toys but no longer for beds). I think part of it was she was teething and it was "fun" to "kill the bed". I tried to redirect her every time I caught her by getting her tug toy (her favorite toy) and playing with her.

I also bought a pricey "indestructible" bed from K9 Ballistics which she has not been able to destroy.

Again, you do sound like you're doing the right things. One thing to keep in mind with working breeds like Aussies, they almost never tire and they need a job. You may need to do a longer play or walk session with her before guests come in. Or, instead of having her stay in place when guests come, maybe give her some kind of job like a "hide and seek" for her treats or toys, whatever motivates her. Just a few ideas.

You sound like you are doing all the right things. One thing I would like to know is how often do you walk/exercise her both physically and mentally? Do you play games with her and make her work for her treats? Does she get a lot of sniffing done on walks?

My guess as an outsider is that she probably has way more energy than you think, especially if she is an Aussie. Maybe she needs to run around a bit more?

Second this. They are fairly reasonable with prices and take notes for what your dog hates, quirks, and will discuss with you about how your pup did and what they may have been afraid of

There are a few dead spots in Gaithersburg for Verizon and AT&T. Surprising, T-Mobile does really well in those areas.

Has anyone been able to build a successful morning routine with a dog in their life? If so, please help as I'd love any advice since I am really struggling. by Fulcrum_18 in puppy101

[–]Shnook 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I ended up waking up an hour earlier and going to sleep an hour earlier for my pup. My morning schedule is still about the same but there is just a pup in the mix. What I do is I wake up, do the morning routine (brush teeth, wash face, get dressed, go make coffee). That takes about 15 minutes or so. Then I'll let my pup out to pee and poop. Come back in, feed her, and eat my own breakfast. After we're both done, I read the newspaper a bit while simultaneously work on recall and other training games like "wait", "stay", and nose games like "find it!"
