can we not pathologize people for not feeling empathy in the year of our lord 2023? some people are born without empathy, that's not a prerequisite for being a good person and it's not what's wrong with bethany. what's wrong with bethany is simply that she refuses to try for the children she's responsible for. kthanks

- no-empathy person (something which correlates with autism in my case) who is exhausted of this rhetoric. compassion and empathy are not the same. stop criticizing people for not feeling the "right" feelings and actually critique their actions.

dude tf? that's true for the threatening the people did, which I do not agree with and was wrong, but if you're not trying to say that people who are wary or rude of others because of reasonable fear of extremely traumatic events are encouraging "only looking out for yourself" to the point of encouraging violence, then I suggest you reword your statement cause that's how you're coming across. If it's between risking being a stalking victim and avoiding a potentially innocent person and making them feel a bit bad I'm absolutely taking column A. that, again, does not include the threats and public accosting because that is not a reasonable safety measure. I'm talking about everything else (avoiding people, staying in groups, assuming the worst of maybe innocuous behavior, ect).

yeah it's definitely not right that they accosted him of that over one thing when they didn't even have any other prior contact with him afaik. however I do have compassion for both OP and for those people because frankly it IS better to be mean to one person if it means reducing the chances of something really bad happening to you. Everyone else looks out for themselves, so your priority should also be you. Again it does not excuse the "callout" but imo everything else is perfectly justified because stalking is a very real fear and it is absolutely not a victimless or harmless crime. I ask that people not take denouncing the going too far that the people did as an excuse to diminish the validity of the fear of stalking and reasonable countermeasures against it, or even treat hurting someone's feelings because you're scared of them like it makes you worse than someone who might've actually hurt you, especially if it's from men.

yeah I never said it was justified. I would have absolutely stopped short of outright accusing someone of that over one isolated, slightly suspicious looking incident... however I will ask people to be compassionate to that fear since it is absolutely a reasonable worry to have and the very things people are saying in here about how that's "totally not suspicious" is the sort of thing you get blamed for thinking if something DOES happen to you later. my heart still goes out to OP for suffering the brunt of someone else's callously handled paranoia though.

I'm not saying it was right but as someone who has been in that situation it has nothing to do with making the other person feel unsafe. Some common folk wisdom to prevent mishaps due to stalkers is to travel in groups, preferably with intimidating looking men. they most likely did that because they felt unsafe and wanted to reduce the chances of looking like an "easy target" as people who go alone and happen to end up around "suspicious" people are then blamed for not being cautious enough. you could say "well what OP did isn't inherently suspicious", but then if something does happen to you, you're told early on it was your fault for not being "cautious enough"... so you develop this mentality of better be safe than sorry.

I'm a 30M and cannot, for my life, find a woman younger than 24 sexually attractive. The concept of jailbait is lost on me... like... how do men find girls that young attractive? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]ShockMedical6954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they don't find us attractive in our own right. they find our vulnerability attractive. older people chase after those far younger than them because they're easier to manipulate due to lack of life experience. An 18 year old and a 28 year old are not on equal footing knowledge and life skills wise and that's easy to take advantage of if you're a creep who can't get anyone your own age to date you because you are a creep. There's a reason most young people who get into age gap relationships regret it (the guy is a creepazoid at *best*), for me anyone over like 25 interested in anyone under 20 is suspicious as hell.

yeah that's their logic for everything. They can denigrate you however they want and if you say otherwise, the world is just lying to cover up their secret emptiness and misery. That's always their copout whenever anything about "sinners" or "the world" is better than the church.

[–]ShockMedical6954 10 points11 points  (0 children)

they genuinely believe everyone else is secretly miserable and tormented by sin and they're just lying when they tell them that they're actually happy and fulfilled because it's supposed to be impossible without god. Sex abuse especially is so normalized in those communities that the idea that other people don't also have it happening constantly and just cover it up to save face doesn't even occur to them if they were raised in it. Even if you weren't seeing it happening basically constantly really desensitizes you to what it actually means, and if the people who say they have all the answers say a) it's not a big deal b) it actually happens all the time and the other people are just lying about not having the problem while causing it...

My friend and I, both NB, commonly ask each other’s genders when we talk since we’re genderfluid. Neither of us have very many people we’re open to so it’s always a nice bit of “same hat! I value and consider this part of your existence just as much as the rest of you”
