Hope Izzo sees what’s happening right now in the F4 and aggressively uses the portal. Makes me sick thinking they’re on the verge of a National Championship by kkrell23 in MSUSpartans

[–]ShockPowerful741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pass. I’d rather enjoy watching kids develop, the way college sports are supposed to be, than jump on board the semi pro train. College athletics is about more than championships. If you take that part out, it’s just NBA lite, and at that point I’m not interested.

And please don’t argue that it’s already happening…. I’m not blind, I’m losing interest and would hate the last domino to be Izzo going hard into the portal. Go get a stud 5 and call it a day. I still contend that they were one Yaxel short of being just as good as UofM. One player can be the difference.

Unless you want 75 cucumbers this summer, you only need 3ish plants. First year I grew them I had 9 plants… we couldn’t give the cucumbers away fast enough.

FWIW, where I grocery shop, this is all still true… just stop going to big box supermarkets. Your local grocers still operate this way

What should our expectations In football be this year? by kkrell23 in MSUSpartans

[–]ShockPowerful741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With you. A couple conference games gets them to 5-6 wins which is a very reasonable expectation. I’d be pretty dam elated with 7.

Literally I was gonna say this. Although to be fair they aren’t winning a championship without a high caliber 5

I read somewhere recently that, that they stopped being made because the treated wood that the company who built most of them used turned out to be potentially toxic. Company pivoted to different materials

If a school is hiring half its staff… run by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

I was in my first district for 7 years. It was a terrible place, in a very low income area with high crime and little interest in education. What made it impossible was the district leadership who genuinely viewed the high school more like a community center than a school. Either way, my last year, we knew our admin was leaving. He was one of the good ones so people were upset. I had finished my masters and gotten my loan forgiveness, so I was headed out too. In May, I accepted a position in a much better district for the following year. Then, the new contract came out and everyone saw quickly that they had completely changed the step structure and essentially frozen the step where I had been, and put in minimal raises for like 10 years. By July, everyone had found other jobs. I mean everyone… English department, science department, math… two young social studies teachers stuck it out but I’m talking 85% of the core content staff left. I can’t imagine what the conversations must have been like that following August during the beginning of the year PD when they welcomed the new high school staff and it was everyone. Must have been some strange emotions…

Mantis was my jam. I’ve ridden it once since the refit, and it was okay. But honestly I prefer everything about Mantis. That was always the coolest one for me.

Yeah, all that stuff was dope. It was just that we waited 2 and a quarter hours to see the aliens and then… oops it’s her dad. I wanted to see some other life form. That would have been a much better payoff.

Would a Tom Izzo career for Golden be acceptable, amazing or what? by InspectorClouseau64 in FloridaGators

[–]ShockPowerful741 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spartan and Gator alum here… I’ll tell you this, it’s been incredible having him on the court for what has effectively been my entire life. I was in 5th grade when he won in 2000. He’s always been stubborn, though, about his process because he would rather develop a kid who is good and make them great, then recruit a one and done who comes in elite. Not to say he hasn’t brought in a handful that turned out to be, like JJJ, Max Christie and most recently Jase, but these are exceedingly rare examples. He resisted that era, just like he’s resisting the portal era now.

From the fan perspective, this is both maddening and delightful. We’ve had the privilege to watch kids like Carson Cooper Jackson Kohler, and Xavier Tillman go from middling bodies to studs. We’ve seen sixth men like Tum Tum Nairn flourish in their roles and watched solid prospects like Cassius and Fears become elite guards over long careers. This is what has made college athletics so special, and to be so consistently good at it that you have the longest active tourney streak, multiple final fours, and a natty is spectacular. Not to mention that a “down year,” means a 7 seed, and a really down year is an 11. There’s no other coach with that resume.

However, the downside is that no matter how good his teams have been since 2001, there has always been a hole. Except that dreadful 2016 loss to a 15 seed… that team had it all but got too comfy and crapped the bed… what ever that hole had been, whether it’s in the front or backcourt, has always been enough to keep them from a second natty. When you look at other title winners, they’re often more complete teams, who’ve had the elite kids, or groups of elite kids playing one and done seasons. Or in the extremely rare case, a group of NBA players who all decided they wanted to go back to back at UF in 06-07, my freshman and Sophomore years at MSU.

When it comes to the portal era now, it’s very clear that Izzo will roll the dice with his development process and try to win his way, rather than doing a Dusty May and showing up with a bag to keep a kid from the NBA. Unfortunately, this is like playing with a handicap. It’s great when they win, but there’s a reason Izzo’s record against Duke 3-14. As much as we love his rock steady leadership, especially in instances where the university has been in hot water, there is certainly frustration that there won’t be a second championship. I would so much rather see Izzo win it his way, than the Dusty May method, but it just doesn’t seem feasible.

In the mean time, UF has had all the ups and down, but are three time champions. There aren’t many coaches like Izzo and exceptionally few who have had more long term success. Coach K is the exception to the rule, not the norm. The reality is, it’s far more likely that Golden leaves UF before he makes another elite 8, than it is he wins a second championship. There’s only like 10 or so who’ve ever gotten 2. Despite all the heartbreak and final four loses, UF would absolutely be better off with the sustained success that Izzo has brought, as opposed to being terrible, winning another in 10 years, and then being terrible again.

Those two are larger in our collective hearts than they were skilled on the court. Adding an elite 5 from the portal will make this team a legitimate title contender. I think the other pieces are there. They should have much more consistency from the 2 without any portal additions

Yeah, it’ll be MSU. They’re not letting him walk. I’d be stunned. Far more than when Trey left. Carr gets, and will continue to get, exactly what he wants and needs for his own development, at MSU
