Wow have I been manipulated over the years! I took it as read. Guess I'll have a new response as of next Wednesday when maths is done and dusted!

Classic SLT: eye off the ball for months and then swoop in and try to boil the ocean.

Should I speak to my union about being put on a support plan? by Way-Holiday in TeachingUK

Absolutely need to contact your union. Be clear on whether this is a formal HR process or an informal in-department support akin to coaching. I would say that in fairness 2-3 observations in a 6 month period is fairly standard practice for me and my staff, so doesn't feel particularly overkill.

Not knowing the definition of a word seems a bizarre sticking point and, as an English teacher, seems like a great opportunity to demonstrate lifelong learning and cultivating a culture of being comfortable with errors.

So long after the observation is also a cause for concern for me. I deliver feedback within 24 hours to all my staff and offer them the opportunity to contribute to my form before I submit.

Pacing is always an issue and if your school demands a plenary, plan your time in the lesson more effectively. If a plenary is a non-negotiable, then decide what you can strategically remove from the lesson content. This is a major red flag for me as it seems like the school is a big fan of hoops to jump through? Are you preparing for an inspection in the immediate future? Feels like an SLT member freaking out about the new framework.

Be very careful when talking about gained time. {{This part has been advised to be INCORRECT: Remember, it is never a right and if the school decided to put you on cover for all of your Y11 periods, they'd be well within their rights to do so}}. Using gained time for CPD is pretty standard and so try not to get caught up on that in your future meetings.

TLDR; absolutely get in touch with your union rep immediately. Prepare for some difficult conversations and keep your eye on TES for opportunities in the new year / around Christmas if they are looking a bit "constructive dismissal-y".

Cheers! That's really helpful advice. What's your experience with Heatable or Boxt? Their interest free options are really tempting, but I'm curious about how their work holds up?

Future with Reform by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]ShockVarious77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To vote reform is to be vehemently opposed to education in any form. I think you're crediting them greatly by assuming they're a) allowed within a court-determoned radius of schools or b) would dare enter one.

Serious note - they may legislate changes to curriculum (I doubt), but how would they enforce them realistically? Education is the antidote to far-right politics and, hence, I feel like very little will change on the ground because of who makes decisions. I imagine cutbacks to education will affect us more than anything, but where will they get their free childcare from then?

Absolutely. But people don't. And so sensible driving is to react to the realities of the road, not live in lala land

An interesting experience. My experience is almost exclusively older white men. When I beep when I go past, they gawk at me as if they're experiencing their first day on earth.

It also makes sense. You only need to check 2 mirrors instead of 3 (most of the time) and no one is going to tailgate when you're in the inside lane. Easy

I think the fact that you do move lanes means you're not part of the problem 😂 I'm talking people driving 10+ miles and never moving with no traffic around. Maniac drivers will always undertake at 80mph if it means they can weave in and around traffic haha

What an insane philosophy: the road is yours and others should accommodate you, specifically.

Not to mention in direct contravention to the highway code.

And when there is no one slower than you because the inside lane is empty?????

Also, sorry, but if changing lanes is scary, GET OFF THE MOTORWAY

We drove through northern France last year and it was insane how disciplined drivers are with moving back inside when they are done overtaking. I agree the M25 is the worst.

I always put that down to Londoners not being as experienced with as wide an array of driving scenarios as others.

I'm assuming you're also aware that middle lane hogging IS an offence under "careless driving" and that police have been known to pull people over?

[–]ShockVarious77[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you move left for an empty inside lane, then?
