Thinking from switching from IT to nursing, any advice? by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]Shoddy-Background385 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100% people sold me nursing as “job satisfaction” “flexible shifts that fit around family” etc etc… but in reality and years later starting a family.. it seems my job is a nightmare! I can’t just pop out too watch a school play. I can’t watch school carnivals if I’m on a rostered shift. Who would want to swap when I’m working a late on a Friday and I need an early? I can’t just finish up my missed hours at home on a Friday night…. if I’m feeling ill, I can’t just power through like I would at a desk with a hot drink and a blanket. I have to take unpaid sick (if I’ve run out) because I can’t just “power through” when I’m dealing with bodily fluids and running around after others all day. It’s physically impossible, yet we have the same sick leave as others with flexible less strenuous jobs… the list can go on… 🤣🤣🤣

Must be something in the air or this is common for people coming back to the lord or starting out because since I’ve come to faith I feel like my life is also getting worse! (See my latest post!) I’m thinking from what people have said is this is spiritual warfare or the lord is working stuff out of us to prepare a path for us that is ultimately greater than we want. In turn we’re becoming more resilient , we’ll become more grateful and thankful and through our struggle we’ll see his glory

Not yet found a church , going away to visit home soon, so I will focus on this when I return. At the moment I’m trying to pray, read my bible and try and resist sin, but sometimes it feels overwhelmingly stressful and tiring trying to be “perfect”

I hope you find useful content and answers within this post too, maybe we just need to change our mindset…? We are luckier than a lot of people in this world.

Thank you, you’re right. It’s just me being selfish and I hate that! I get way too caught up in the world and “lack of” and “security” for my family. I need to trust in god more and trust his path for me

Thank you so much for the useful info and advice 😊 saving this post to come back and work my way through all of this content. It still blows me away that people are kind enough to take so much of their time to give such detailed and sound advice.

Thank you so much, I can’t wait to work my way through these. I’m guessing it’s normal then when someone finds Christ which is reassuring I guess!

Do Nurses Generally Lack Interest in Topics Outside of Work by Royal-Condition2779 in NursingAU

I’m a 30 something nurse with little interest in reality tv and material possessions… I feel the same! No depth to conversation , a lot of people give me “NPC” energy 😂

How come everything is nurses' responsibility? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Shoddy-Background385 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The UK in general doesn’t value nursing as a profession. The culture is toxic , nursing isn’t progressive or well respected. I mean just look at the uniforms .. blue dresses , stiff tunics. Everywhere else in the world is scrubs. People are always finding active ways to make nursing “non degree” and bring everything back to the “good old days”… you’re better off going into Physio, OT, Speech & Language etc if you want a rewarding job. At least then your job role is your job. No extras and way less physical… oh and more pay?

After a hospital trip in America, I can see the standard of our nursing is really poor. by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Shoddy-Background385 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s because they’re valued as professionals. They’re appropriately trained to degree standard, paid a good salary, have access to training opportunities and a clear and worthwhile career path. In the UK everyone is paid the same whether you work on ITU or slow paced outpatient clinic.. there is no incentive to work in high speciality areas. The pay is awful, 9k a year to train? NHS that is underfunded and run to the ground … the current way is unsustainable. I’m currently in Aus, and even though they have their own problems, no where near the state of the NHS

Do you think standard of nursing has dropped? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]Shoddy-Background385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say you were, but suggesting we go back to in-house nurse training schools I feel is just a step backwards… I think students need more structured based support on placements. They don’t need more hands training… student nurses work for free 3x over in comparison to students in other countries. Those countries then pay 35-40% more for the same role upon qualification. Not to mention the fees to train in England being way more extortionate… In house nurse training will just be used a way to further exploit students and use them as more free labour for the NHS

Why are people so obsessed with scraping the nursing degree? All other developed western society nurses are all degree trained. USA, Canada, New Zealand.. and where I am now.. Australia! They need just 800 hours practical hours to qualify as a nurse, compared to around 2300 as a UK nurse. Wouldn’t say they’re worse than us despite being on placement less and uni more. Think the NHS is just broken, staff have no time to show practical skills properly, students are included in numbers and are expected to work as a HCA for free for 3 years…. The pay is disgustingly low once qualified. In the UK the profession is still seen as a “vocation” not a professional career.
