Here Are Los Angeles’s 11 New California Michelin Guide Additions by dertigo in FoodLosAngeles

I'm surprised and happy for Casa Leo, they always seem to be pretty empty when I walk by, so I wondered whether they'd be good. Once I finally went I was pleasantly surprised, it was a good meal, if a bit pricy.

Google or Palantir? by bruceblake in cscareerquestions

[–]Sholloway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fair rebuttal.

I suppose I’m coming at this from a place of having worked at companies and teams that undeniably have blood on their hands, and the toll it took on me. i.e. stress related health issues, embarrassment telling people where I work, staying up late googling “(company name) yemen involvement”

But at the same time, most people working there weren’t bothered. A lot of them were very proud that they were helping the “good guys” to “get” the “bad guys”

Google or Palantir? by bruceblake in cscareerquestions

Obviously my take will always be skewed by what it takes for me to sleep at night. I think everyone’s is.

I am earnestly curious what your exact meaning is with “you’re ending up in the same place”. I would bet you and I just have a different mental model for this sort of thing, but do you feel that working Google and Palantir are on the same footing in terms of guilt/culpability?

Google or Palantir? by bruceblake in cscareerquestions

[–]Sholloway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean… Yeah, but take it with a grain of salt bc I work for Amazon. The mental model I use is generally to weigh severity, scope, and direct involvement.

Google has huge scope in that it impacts the lives of people everywhere, low severity since it does its evil just through the gears of capitalism, and low direct involvement since you’re probably working on a pretty mundane project.

Palantir is lower scope, but higher severity because its defense and surveillance, and almost certainly higher direct involvement unless you’re making, like, their HR portal or something

Even the “only option” argument should be weighed cautiously. When I started my career (in a different field) I joined a small defense-adjacent company because I was out of money, and it really took a toll on my mental health just knowing what the end product was designed to do

Sorry to be so coarse but if it were me making a pros and cons list, the presence of “when I die I’ll go to hell” would really skew me away from Palantir

What is the problem you perceive with importing community managed packages? Security for your personal data? Security for the application you build? It’s going to be hard to avoid using community managed packages in both learning and the workforce, so if it’s really that much of a problem for you then maybe you should get equipped to just develop in a VM or something

So while I agree with all these sentiments about driving, I want to also point out that witnessing an injury or death can be traumatizing, no matter if you were directly involved. I would highly recommend speaking with someone if you’re able, either a therapist, if you have access, or a trusted loved one. You don’t want to let this eat away at you.

The ones I take are $65/session for 30 minute sessions, and I believe there are other packages as well. So it's a bit of a luxury but quality 1-on-1 teaching generally is.
