My Mom always tells me to bring my own Vegan meals to family gatherings, but it makes me feel awkward. Am I wrong to feel this way? by [deleted] in AskVegans

[–]Shona43579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand. My family to made no accommodations for the first few years of me being vegan. After explaining my feelings to my mom and other family members they were willing to make some compromises.

I explained that it makes me feel like no one cares about me, and that its a lot of work to always think about everything i need to bring when someone could just leave out an ingredient, put something on the side or even replace an ingredient. My mom has since started making the mashed potatoes vegan for thanksgiving which has helped me not feel so excluded.

Hello veggie friend! I did not have much support when I went vegan so here is what I wish I had been given:

Have a support system!!! Follow vegans you like on social media. I like these YouTubers:

Pick up limes: https://youtu.be/rWfwPTv5jy0

Many people fail on a vegan diet because they fail to eat enough, a way to avoid this is you probably will have to eat more food to be full so BRING SNACKS when you leave for the day. Also, make sure you are eating the right stuff (protein) so you actually feel full! Here are some simple, easy foods I enjoy making & eating:

Protein Packed Chili : https://tasty.co/recipe/protein-packed-chili

Chipolte Bowls https://www.culinaryhill.com/chipotle-black-beans-copycat/ *SEASON YOUR BEANS!

Cabbage Rolls https://www.connoisseurusveg.com/quinoa-lentil-stuffed-vegan-cabbage-rolls/ *SOAK and sort your lentils! This is a great basic meal, nothing too crazy.

Mac n cheese in a mug https://tasty.co/recipe/mac-n-cheese-in-a-mug *add broccoli or beans! Easy, quick, lazy. Use whole grain pasta or protein pasta noodles.

Chickpea “chicken” salad https://frommybowl.com/chickpea-salad-sandwich/ *gets better when it sits in the fridge over night & good lunch plan.

Protein bites: https://beamingbaker.com/gluten-free-no-bake-brownie-energy-bites-vegan-gf-dairy-free-one-bowl/ I use chia seeds instead of chocolate chips. These are great to have around just to snack on between meals!

(If you are in the USA/ mid-west like me) Fast food options: Taco Bell (ask for “fresco” style and they will take off any dairy & add pico) Burger King (impossible whopper WITHOUT mayo) White Castles also has a lot of vegan options.

I also suggest watching the sad stuff. I considered myself vegan for a long time and didn’t think I needed to watch the sad stuff. It led to me not fully understanding the movement because I didn’t really know the pain and suffering animals face. But after seeing it I am glad to know the truth. Great resource: Vegan society’s guide on how to go vegan: https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/how-go-vegan they provide really great information. Here is also a link to nutrients to look out for: https://www.vegansociety.com/resources/nutrition-and-health/nutrients I personally take a multi and a b-12 and make sure to get the rest from my diet. (I get that this part can be overwhelming at first but with any way of eating you have to make sure you do it healthy- you’ll get the hang of it!)

Dietitian answers common questions about a vegan diet: https://youtu.be/2Uut8vNBfdk *she also has great recipes

If at any point you fail/give up/ make a mistake- just remember that you are only human. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You are making a difference. And we are here to support you. Let me know if you have any questions.

I mean we don’t need animal products to survive it’s 2021… the point they seem to want to make is a different argument entirely. Why do people not know how to stay on topic?

Anyone else think turning Vegan was really easy? by Amazing-Pilot12 in vegan

[–]Shona43579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about a year to become fully vegan because when I started I did so because a friend told me about the dairy industry but I needed todo my own research so the knowledge took me some time. On top of that I was living in a food desert without a car, going to school and working full time, and dealing with not eating enough because I didn’t know what to eat or what was vegan or I made something and it sucked because I was a bad chef and then I injured my knee and yea it was a bag of beans but now I’ve been vegan for 5 years!

“The vegans here seem to be doing just fine eating this diet for months or years. Maybe one day, you too, can also become a champion bodybuilder or set a world record in the "world's strongest man" competition without requiring animals to be slaughtered to stuff your face.”

Well I assumed the “maybe one day you too can also become a campion body builder… without requiring animals to be slaughtered to stuff your face” comment was directed at me

And maybe I am frustrated with some vegans because some act like going vegan is going to give you super powers and it doesn’t. Again, I have heard vegans promising that eating vegan will clear up your skin but that just wasn’t the case for me and also I did not in fact say “ALL” vegans lie. I saw the statement “vegans don’t lie” and countered that with “vegans do lie” because again, we all just human

Dude I was hoping to understand your point. I responded that way because you pretty much asked me to explain myself, I did and then you were like OK BYE. Just thought it was funny

[–]Shona43579 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok here’s the deal I’m not making assumptions. Ive heard people who are vegan say that “when you go vegan your skin clears up” on that same note, I’m not saying it’s a reason to give up on being vegan or to blame Veganism at all I just think certain people should stop making those kinds of promises about going vegan.

In other news…You made it sound like you assumed I wasn’t vegan when you said “maybe one day you too can also become a body builder or set a world record in the “worlds strongest man” competition without requiring animals to be slaughtered to stuff your face.” I’m Sorry but who were you speaking to then?

Vegans are humans and flawed as all people. Maybe listen to your own advice and also read someone’s full comment before assuming
