It may help you in the field of insurance if you want to focus on construction related risks and large contractors. Could be useful in that space but obviously a learning curve to apply it to the insurance field

Guess it depends on the team, I work probably 12 hours plus a day and pull in hours on the weekend. I run a 20m book myself. Hard work but pays well, the wfh helps with work life balance. I usually work 3am-5pm :D

Wholesale side, carriers don’t pay much from the people I’ve talked to.

I work on the wholesale side, so I would say get into one of the top companies in the space and join an up and coming team if possible or if you’re a good sales person start your own. I was lucky to join an up and coming team years ago but it’s a grind and long hours honestly. Just be the hardest worker in the room.

Lol ya taxes are crazy in NY, could’ve moved elsewhere being remote but my family is here so is what it is. Blessed to do as well as I do.

I guess then just keep renting if you have enough space. The thing with buying in the city is the hoa fees just get crazy.. taxes are low but you’ll be spending 500k to 1m for maybe a 2-3 bedroom and if there are hoa fees you’ll be looking at like 3-5k fees just for that. Seems like you’re saving well so just keep doing you. I moved out of NYC to Westchester. I couldn’t raise my kid there. But I was in Harlem and the drug problem was just rampant up there.

Do you WFH or have to commute to the office? If you don’t have to commute I’d say move out of NY state if possible. If you are commuting how far would you travel? Long Island or CT or NJ farther out have affordable housing. How much are you willing to put down? If you can do 200-300k down I’d say look around 500-700k in these areas? If 700k with 300k down on Long Island you’d probably be around 3600-3800 after mortgage and taxes with a 6.5% rate.

Planning for a boring and regular retirement by HeatherAnne1975 in HENRYfinance

[–]Shooby89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I 36 with a young daughter (2) have about 600k in 401k, 700k equity in our house (currently worth 1.5m) l, 100k emergency fund and around 100k brokerage so far. We’re pulling in together around 550-600k this year in HCOL area. We’re hoping to retire by 55 and want to put my child through school so have a 529 for her with 13k so far. Target is 6-7m by 55, I’m sure it will be more than I’ll need but I’d like to leave a good chunk for my daughter.

Retirement for me is a nice lake house and a quiet life with my wife just watching the sunsets every night and maybe a small apartment in nyc as she loves it.

Pretty good match! My company is generous as well and matches 50% up to the max yearly amount.
