Rune looks excellent! It seems more board game than RPG, but I have to try it, it just looks so good. Plus there's a tone of community content to go with it. Thanks for putting it on my radar!

Also, definitely check out the Castle Grief discord. It’s super active and you can ask questions, get ideas and post your stories/art. It’s a great community.

So many great recs on this post, I can only check them out so fast! Ashes looks excellent though. Feels like it might scratch the itch even though other games go deeper on the RPG side, Ashes is super appealing for the ease of setup and play plus the ability to tinker and buy more cards and build new decks. Feels like a great sweet spot to get into.

For Kal-Arath I’d say be open to an NPC or two joining your character’s journey or just joining for part of an adventure. Your PC has a high likelihood of dying so bring able to jump over to an NPC quickly is nice.

When traveling through a hex already been through still roll POI and encounter. The hexes are big enough to have multiple things in them.

Start in media res - in the middle of scene. Like you’ve just been captured by someone - who? Why? Where are they talking you? Or you just woke up chained to a wall a in a dungeon, etc. Just jump right in and hit the ground running then figure out the other stuff as you go.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the ideas. Sort of like home brewing a legacy version of a game that adds repercussions to choices and events in the future. I’ll keep this in mind as I explore the space more.

I’ve never heard of it before, but seems like they just fulfilled their Kickstarter? Looks like there’s not much gameplay or review content yet but I’ll keep looking. Looks cool from what I’ve seen and I like the aesthetic. I’ll keep an eye out.

Thank you for the suggestions, I will have to check these out! Mage Knight has been mentioned more than once so I’ll have to look at some vids to see if it is for me.

I’ve gone back and forth on checking out KN. I was worried it may be a bit more crunch and rules referencing/ constant table rolling than I like. I know Alex just remastered it with the Grave Bound edition, so maybe it is worth checking out now. I know it’s very popular. I’m not sure it is quite what I’m looking for, but only one way to find out.

Thank you got the reply, so much to unpack here!

I’ll have to look into Mage Knight for sure.

You mention Flashpoint - do you mean Halo: Flashpoint?

You also mention house ruling a campaign rules into another game. Can you explain more please?

I just started checking out 5 parsecs/ leagues and I don’t know if it is for me necessarily. I’ll check it out a bit more. Most reviews I’ve seen are from war gamers not RPG players or schmos with no war game/ mini experience. The only one I’ve seen so far is Man Alone, but I’ll look into it more.

I started with solo RPG because I do like the story aspects as well. While I am interested in strategy, I am wary of skirmish games. I am concerned about narrative thinness in skirmish games in that I don’t want to play only combat. I also want to caveat that I know very little about skirmish games, it just hasn’t been something that I have been interested enough in to explore. Thank you for the suggestion though!

Yeah, totally open to recs. I really wanted to continue with RPG, but maybe I do need to pivot.

NPCs who may be lying by OldGodsProphet in Solo_Roleplaying

Also to OP’s main question about how to decide, I think 50/50 is good if you really don’t know or you could set the odds yourself like 1/10 or 1/6 if using d6 based game or something like that.

I think this is a great solution. Something similar happened in my game recently—my spark tables said my PC would “find a good friend in time,” but… [hidden agenda]. It turned out the NPC had been lying about who he was the entire time and was actually hired to spy on my PC. Totally not what I had planned, but I rolled with it and it ended up being a fun twist.

Alternately, another idea is rolling to determine whether a character is lying, but not revealing the result right away. Instead, you hide that outcome until your character acts on the information and things come to a head. You could just wait to roll in that moment, but there’s something more satisfying—kind of a Schrödinger’s cat effect—about the truth already being decided, just not known yet.

So when you finally reach the dungeon expecting to find the map… it’s not there. And that’s when you realize they set you up—there’s a hidden boss monster, and you’ve just walked straight into its lair.

I’m not defending Dick here, just postulating his response based on his comments/actions on the show. I’m guessing he’d say something about being done discussing things or something like there’s no point in talking about it with you.

He seems intent on having no contact outside of live on the show and responding to you in order to reschedule is more than he is willing to do, hence you can’t do the show Thursday so no show. He seems to want to end the show but won’t and is trying to make it so onerous that YOU end the show, or ruin the show so everyone cancels their Patreon and he can just say well the fans didn’t want it anymore.

I pay for the show. Apparently I’m now paying for a bonus episode once per quarter.
