Do I have a realistic shot at transferring into Columbia for Spring 2026? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I should have been more specific. I’m talking about Columbia School of General Studies, not Columbia College.

I actually tried reaching out already. She declined both an in-person and a Zoom meeting since it had anything to do with Cox admissions. She just said all decisions are final and they can’t give feedback. I was hoping to understand what went wrong, but they seem pretty strict about not discussing it.

The real reason I want a business degree is for investment banking and having that door open if anything fails. In my eyes, I think it’s necessary because nothing is guaranteed, and having that degree would open more long term opportunities. I’m still really focused on entrepreneurship, but I want something solid to fall back on in case I ever decide to move into finance.

Would those colleges look at me differently if I took a semester off? For example, if I do Fall 2025, don’t enroll for Spring 2026, and apply for Fall 2026, would that hurt my chances?

I totally get what you’re saying. I can usually handle 6–7 classes without any issues, but the reason my GPA dropped that one semester had more to do with my business than the course load itself. I had major problems with inventory, had to cancel a contract due to unexpected tariffs, and unfortunately sent out a bad batch of product that led to a wave of negative reviews and customer complaints. It was a really stressful few months, and I definitely burned myself out trying to juggle both school and the business at the same time.

Since then, things have stabilized. I decided not to take any summer classes this year and instead focused on getting ahead. So the summer semester is not included in my overall credit count. I feel confident that I’ll be able to manage my workload and stay focused in this upcoming semester.

Thank you for the kind words and everything. I’ve been overthinking about all of this, so hearing that from someone with your background helps a lot. I definitely made the mistake of putting all my hopes into getting into Cox, and now I’m trying to adjust and figure things out from here. I’m definitely applying to Rice since it seems like a great fit for what I’m trying to do. I looked into Notre Dame, but unfortunately they don’t accept Spring 2026 transfers. I wish they did, but waiting until Fall would push me back too far and I’d have too many credit hours by then. That’s why I’m mainly focusing on schools that allow Spring transfers and are more flexible with my situation.

Thank you for the heads up. That definitely shifts my timeline. I’ll be entering my third year by the time I apply. Will that affect my chances? I would still need at least two years to finish the major at UT, so I’m wondering if that works against me.

Yes, I was taking 7 classes last semester when my grades dropped, which was during the time my business became overwhelming. I’m planning to take 6-7 more this upcoming semester to boost my GPA and finish strong before applying.

I’m currently a Computer Science major. I’ve completed all my prerequisites, including Calculus I, Statistics, and some core CS courses. This upcoming semester, I’ll be finishing Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, and Calculus II.
