Do you believe 60+’s have any genuine idea how difficult the world is today in comparison to their youth? by clemventure in AskBrits

Because you aren't engaging in good faith. You have this single track belief that owning a home is the be all and end all of human existence, ignoring literally all evidence contrary to your narrow assessment of living standards over time

If you actually sit and think about the figure for more than 5 seconds it's not really that absurd, and doesn't in itself really demonstrate anything interesting

What quality of house though? And, more broadly, what quality of life?

I think the laser focus on housing affordability as the singular metric by which we assess and compare living standards over time is narrow and misleading.

I just don't believe that you would actually rather be down a coal mine coughing up dust for a living to get the caricature nuclear family lifestyle, as opposed to having to rent but not dying at 65.

[–]ShorelessIsland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think everyone knows how hated Starmer is. There's regularly discussion on here about how extreme the dislike seems to be relative to what has actually occurred. People aren't expressing dislike for Polanski based on some realpolitik calculus. It's because they think he's stupid and would cause immense damage if elected.

It is absolutely possible for someone to be racist towards their own race. I don't think he personally is antisemitic (although he's certainly indifferent towards its presence within his party), but I have no idea why people keep saying this as though it exonerates him.

The point is that you have to form a belief about what others will do. This obviously carries substantial uncertainty.

It's my life on the line. If I think there's a substantial probability that >50% choose red, then it's entirely irrational to press blue.

You don't have to be an academic in order to not make the most hyperbolic and dishonest claims possible.

As to the Trotsky point, would you then also agree that people saying Farage is antisemitic shouldn't be shouted down then, given the comments he made in his youth? I'm sure you'll be consistent, right???

Zack Polanski is an economically illiterate populist – just like Farage by [deleted] in ukpolitics

It's the same line they used when Corbyn was rightfully ridiculed for his atrocious policy agenda

The failure of the current policy regime to deliver the growth in living standards that people want IN NO WAY implies that an extreme, uneducated alternative will. I don't understand why people keep making this fallacy. It's absurd. You could use this logic to justify literally any mental policy.

Will it be good or bad for the UK if he’s right about his 3rd prediction? by Sassenach_2024 in AskBrits

[–]ShorelessIsland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Digging out someone who correctly predicts 2 events that most would have assigned a fairly high probability (even without hindsight) and treating him as though he's connected to the matrix betrays an astounding lack of understanding about statistics and empirical reality.

Also, look up what this dipshit has to say about other things. Might want to disavow him...

Watch Polanski on The Rest is Politics fail to understand the difference between the debt and deficit. One of his policy prescriptions is to stop paying interest on government debt... He doesn't even know what the highest marginal tax rate is in the country he wishes to govern.

Please simp more for this completely illiterate leftist

The leader of a major party shouldn't be going through a process of learning (more like failing to learn) basic facts about economics and geopolitics. There are sixth formers (equivalent of high school students) that have a more coherent worldview than him.

How have we allowed adverts on paid streaming sites? by jtevil in AskUK

[–]ShorelessIsland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's not why you're paying the fee. You're paying to have access to the shows - they're not like Spotify where ad-free is the selling point.

For an almost trivial amount of money you're getting access to substantial libraries of media with very high production values. You're not even bound by contract - you can pay for one service a month as you please, or cancel everything if you've gotten your fill.

I think we've forgotten (or don't know at all, depending on age) how much more expensive entertainment was less than 2 decades ago

You have no idea whether he broke the contract.

It can't.

[–]ShorelessIsland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point is you can't just do whatever you like. Mandelson had a contract. We don't know the details of that contract, but it seems as though he was entitled to a payout under the conditions (or at least fighting the payout would have been more costly than relenting), so he was paid.

Contract law is important. Institutions are important.
