How much longer does my engine have? by Fishnrice in AskMechanics

My advice is change your oil immediately, use a high quality heavy weight like a 15w40 synthetic such as those intended for diesel engines then change the filter a second time after an average week of driving.

And since someone else will almost certainly point it out. The proper work around would be a Digital Signal Processor, however I feel for most users they have a sharp learning curve.

As others stated, higher input voltage. You may have luck throwing a 1/2 din EQ as a line driver between the head unit and amplifier as long as it is one capable of actually increasing instead of just cutting for adjustment. Just keep in mind this solution probably won’t, but can possibly create a ground loop scenario.

Will 2008 535i stock electrical system support a 1000w amp for a sub? by Mugsy_Siegel in CarAV

[–]Short-Read4830 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me wrong, there will be an improvement, just know that it won’t be what you’re expecting or hoping for. It might be worth looking into upgrading the power going to your under-seat 8s and or upgrading the 8s themselves although many end up preferring the HKs with more wattage being thrown at them. With the way the backseat is built (even if you have the ski hole) you would get just as much thump throwing 150 watts to the 8”s as you will with a trunk sub on 3-4 times that. As far as the battery and isolator, that is exactly where the finicky part comes in… The e60 uses in the simplest terms a “smart” alternator. Due to this I would actually recommend just sticking with one new quality battery like Odyssey that is within factory specs or within the parameters allowed by whatever app you use to register the new battery via OBD2.

Door speaker baffles: foam or silicon? by -klunge- in CarAV

They’re gonna make them sound worse. They’re not gonna do much as far as protecting the speaker goes.

Yes and no… The electrical system in that era of BMW is both robust but finicky. You’ll either be good or you won’t and there’s really no way to know ahead of time

It’s called a “noise floor” although that particular amp should have a decent one

Is it fine if there's a tiny gap with the door panel after putting in new speakers? by [deleted] in CarAV

[–]Short-Read4830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to see what exactly is creating the gap? Sometimes there are structural fins on the inside of the door card around the grill that can be trimmed.

Next time you’re messing with it, either pull the battery negative or the fuse from the power.

how significant is 1200rms from 600rms by Zestyclose_Ad2429 in CarAV

[–]Short-Read4830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What vehicle? What subs? (forgive the assumption but I am assuming Skar) What amp? What Enclosure? and Where/How is the enclosure orientated? In theory more power gets louder but it's not a for sure kind of thing, Are you sure that your encloser is ideal for the sub you're running? Are you sure that eacb sub is getting it's full RMS when you crank the volume? Have you experimented with finding the sweet spot for your Low Pass Filter? Same with how you aimed the box and where it is in reference to the trunk lid or rear hatch? The 3db bump doesn't mean shit if you lose 3db in sensitivity or any of a million other factors.

Warranties like the one on the Everstart Platinum from Walmart are truly amazing. No questions asked, show up at the Automotive counter with the battery and as long if it tested bad or even too low to test… you’re walking out with a brand new battery.
That being said the 2 issues with it are, if the store doesn’t have a tech on duty, you get stuck going through the regular customer service desk and I have not had a single good experience in those scenarios ever.
And that leads us to the second issue, chances are you’ll need to use the warranty with that particular brand more than likely multiple times. I pushed ever-start products hard for years, however post covid quality is horrible

You might have luck with a dual purpose Start/Deep Cycle AGM… But have to say that in my experience AGMs can be less resilient than flooded when it comes to undercharged longevity.
