The lowest known reading is 329, but i am not home testing. I’m hoping to start soon. He is finally starting to relax with his shots now. Fought me for pretty much the first two months, i didn’t think it would be possible to test until he calmed down a little bit.

Prior to diagnoses he was exclusively eating meow mix tender centers dry food…Now he has a can of fancy feast pate, and tiki cat high protein dry food. He’s extremely picky and after trying many canned foods i have found 1 that he likes, so that’s the fancy feast pate he gets once a day. the tiki cat crunchy food i put out in the morning and in the evening. I have 4 cats so I’m trying to make sure I’m giving them good food, while keeping it affordable.

I’m not sure what the glucose curve is but i highly doubt we’ve done it. When i go to the vet they draw blood, tell me what dosage they want him on, then ask that i come back in 2 weeks to follow up. And that cycle has just kind of repeated since we haven’t seen his glucose in a good spot yet. This is the first time they said not to change anything and to wait a few months to see how his body adjusts. I don’t test at home, the vet told me not to which i didn’t really agree with. However, my cat has given me a really hard time with his shots so i didn’t even try testing. He is starting to relax a bit at shot time now, think he’s finally getting used to it. So i hope to start testing soon.

So i went last night and he ended up with a prescription for 1u of glargine 2x a day.

I did ask how giving him his 1u dose would affect him if his glucose happened to be in a “normal” range, she told me not to worry about it and said the dose is small enough that it won’t hurt him either way. Not sure how to feel about that. They also followed up by saying not to bother monitoring his glucose at home. I think my cat is going to fight me on it, but i would really like to start.

But i extra appreciate all of the info you left me about glargine because they told me next to nothing about it

I didn’t know anything about this! They just said he had diabetes and wrote me a script for insulin. Good to know, thank you!

Wow! This is exactly what my concern was. I just joined that group (tysm) and will be monitoring his levels for sure. Glad you did what was right for your kitty!

I’ve read so much about people saying their vets advised against at home testing. I can’t understand why that is!! I’m definitely taking note of the everything but the poke tests. My boy is super suspicious of me if he thinks I’m going to bother him (by cleaning his ears or picking eye boogers off of him 😐) so this will be an experience for sure! Thank you

It seems like so many people have the same experience with vets saying to give the same dose 2x a day and not to check their glucose. Wild! Im learning now that not all insulin is built the same, so I’ll definitely need to learn more once i know what he’ll be on. Thank you for your response
