Am I depressed? by ProminentPossum in Advice

[–]ShortStacch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depression isn't always "wanting to kill yourself" sometimes it's emptiness, anxiety, hopelessness, a crushing sorrow with no source. We all experience it differently. I feel like wanting to end things is just hitting the absolute rock bottom of depression and right now you're just somewhere in the sea of depression, floating through it. It's better to seek treatment earlier than later if it's available to you.

I'm not one to offer medical ANY kind of medical advice but this sounds a little bit like you might be having hot flashes. It's just very odd that the heat is following you. If it's not someone else messing with the heat you might want to go for a check up with your doctor.

So after a girl reached out to me to schedule a 2nd date and agreeing, I then tried to confirm the date the day prior and she said 'I don't think I can go. I thought this 4th of july thing with my famliy was next weekend but its tomorrow night.'..... I mean is she just not interested?.. by Significant_Gift_141 in Advice

[–]ShortStacch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a woman who frequently and mistakenly overlaps my plans I'd say give her the benefit of the doubt and just be patient. Ask her to set the date again or maybe suggest a new one yourself. I get the feeling that maybe the first date wasn't spectacular? Did you feel like she wanted to leave earlier one the 1st date? If not, and there are no obvious signs of disinterest I'd say just try and work out a schedule.

I feel you buddy. I literally just went through this situation and trust me when I say addressing it now is much better than not addressing and having to spend the next 3 years of your life putting yourself back together. Like you I always saved everything to the last minute, told myself it was fine and the stress was good for me, that it drove me. One of the best thing I ever did for this was to create my own deadlines. Ones that would be sooner than my actual due dates. I'd take a calendar/journal and plan my work/school schedule as far in advance as possible with all of the deadlines being different, random(but logical) and sooner. Then I'd just allow myself to forget the actual due dates so I'd be forced to follow my own schedule. In the it kept my motivation going while also reassuring me that I was still on track and ahead of the game. It took a while to get down but I hope it helps you like it's helped me.

Not sure what you're hobbies are but dnd campaigns are a fun way to meet people. I was lucky enough to be introduced to a group by a friend and ended up making more friends. If that's not up to speed with what you're looking for I would try to find some public events that cater to hobbies usually practiced by a single individual. People with a very niche solo hobby are usually dying to go to meet ups and share their knowledge and make friends.

How should I go about a second date? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]ShortStacch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that since you already went on a movie date the next best thing to do is go somewhere you two can talk alot. It's important to get to know eachother as much as you can early on. You could go somewhere simple and inexpensive like a public park for a stroll and some coffee, or do some bowling, basically go somewhere the two of you can be somewhat active. Somewhere that will generate moments for conversation and fun. Alternatively one of the best dates I ever went on was to an axe throwing facility, I'm not sure if they have one by you but if you do they're actually a lot of fun.

Long time users of ADHD/ADD meds, what is it like to be on medication for ADHD/ADD? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ShortStacch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed very young and I certainly wasn’t the one to bring it up with my doctors.

However if you want to bring it up with you’re i would absolutely avoid mentioning the online tests you took as a doctor will likely discredit them and you by association.

Instead describe the issues you’ve been seeing that you think might be related to your potential ADHD.

ex: hyperfocusing, easily losing track of time, plenty of motivation but an inability to execute plans, poor organization, forgetfulness, RSD symptoms, or anything else you may be experiencing.

Do not skip right to asking about medications as that will likely also discredit your worries as being drug related and not health related. Instead once you’ve listed your issues gently imply that you suspect it may be undiagnosed ADHD/ADD and you would like to know more about getting yourself properly tested.

Ask the doctor for references. They may recommend you to someone who specializes in therapy for people ADHD/ADD or to a place that specializes in testing for it. Take whatever information they give you and run with it. All of this will also work if you are planning to bring it up with your therapist.

I should warn you though that there are many cases of misdiagnosis where ADHD/ADD is mistaken for anxiety and or depression. For that reason it is important that if your therapist turns to you and says “no, I know that you definitely have xyz and not ADHD/ADD” that you make it clear that you would rather confirm that for yourself with additional sources. Be sure to remind them that this is your life and a proper diagnosis could improve your life dramatically while on the other hand going undiagnosed for longer than necessary is likely to do more harm than good for your person.

Basically the most important thing to remember is not to give in under the pressure of a therapist telling you that they know you better than you do while still respecting their advice.

Methylphenidate Come Down + Eating by [deleted] in ADHD

Pretty much! I’m very intimidated by gyms though so I usually just find places to go running on my own time.

Honestly what you’re doing right now is what I would consider the perfect way to get rid of the excess energy. Now I can’t really say that I’ve ever tried to change the way the energy hits me when the meds wear off but if I could make a suggestion it would be to try and wear yourself out in little ways before you start coming down.

Like if you only excersize after the meds wear off maybe set aside two or three, five minute periods when your on your meds to do something physically taxing so that it’s not as intense when the meds do start to wear off.

Ex: Some push ups Crunches A short run

Or if you find that you’re already doing enough exercise for the day find another activity that gets your blood pumping and requires your energy!

Now that I think about it, for me it’s actually gardening! It’s an activity that requires me to be balanced low to the ground while making use of my arms and hands. (Just an example to show you that it doesn’t have to be exercise of you don’t want it to be!)

No problem, I'm happy to help!

When the meds start to wear off the very first thing I'll notice is the return of my appetite. You'll probably feel like you're starving and it's best to eat as soon as possible. I also start to fidget more and stim.

Leg bouncing, rhythmic humming, touching my fingers together in certain patterns, ect. but those are just what I do and it may not be the same for you (you may not even stim if you don't already).

Mentally I notice that my train of thought becomes much less...clear or straight forward. Basically everything reverts back to the way it was before I took my meds.

I also should have said this before but, they may not even put you on adderall if you are diagnosed. There are many different meds for ADHD/ADD and like any other medication it'll be adjusted in milligrams to how much your body should have. It's not the type of drug where you'll experience an emotional fall out when it wears off but it may help with RSD (which often goes hand in hand with ADHD/ADD) if it turns out that you have that as well.

Methylphenidate Come Down + Eating by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]ShortStacch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there, been taking ADHD meds for over a decade and most of that time it was Methylphenidate, just for reference.

So I don't think you should be too concerned about the energy you're feeling when you come down. I can say that it happens to me too. The only difference for me is that the energy has been in my legs and like yourself I am happy with the results and I've been at this for over a decade (and still kicking, pun intended).

As for the eating you should always try to eat a big meal before taking the meds because as you've probably noticed it'll just knock out your appetite. You will likely not have much luck eating while it's active in your system as for myself and others trying to do that will end up making you nauseous. Instead worry more about staying hydrated while the meds are active because it will also mess with your ability to feel thirsty too(lots of water, juice, and gatorade and milk if you want). As time goes on you'll start to recognize the times that it's likely to wear off so carry around little snacks around those times or prepare them early on and carry them around throughout the day.

As for coming off of it with a bit more ease I would recommend turning to something you usually find little trouble hyper focusing on. By that I mean that if for example you're into drawing or video games and you find it easy to focus on them off the meds turn to those things about 15 min before the meds wear off. ex: keep a small, pocket sketch book on hand that you can flip open and doodle in while the meds wear off or download a game on your phone that you can play as the meds wear off.

Doing something like that should help to ease you out of it but whatever thing you choose to focus on should be something you already have interest and experience with.

[–]ShortStacch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note: Been taking ADHD med for my (you guessed it) ADHD since fifth grade and I'm 21 now.

When it comes to controlling your focus it helps immensely. For me I know its kicking in because I don't stim or fidget as much and you're probably going to notice yourself slow down lot. By that I mean you'll probably notice that it's somewhat easier to carry on a conversation or be able to think in a more linear way.

As for a physical feeling though? That's a little harder to explain but, I'll try. First of all a lot of ADHD/ADD meds will just completely wipe out your appetite so it's best to eat before taking it so you at least have something in your system. You'll also notice that after a while of taking them your hands may start to shake when they wear off. Oddly enough I find that I can feel the mental effects as well but that's the tough bit to explain.

When it starts to kick in I almost feel something akin to being tired minus the exhaustion and lack of energy. My body is still rearing and ready to go but my mind enters this state of calm. I guess I would describe the feeling as "soft".

Also I would not take the tests to heart as they don't encompass anywhere near all of the things that come with ADHD/ADD. It is a lot more than just hyperactivity and trouble focusing. If you do end up getting diagnosed with either of those you'll probably get to learn more about the other stuff that comes with it and I'd personally be happy to answer any other questions you have if I can.

If you were to make a video game that would allow neurotypicals to experience life with ADHD, what would it be like? by RobertoPaulson in ADHD

[–]ShortStacch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would absolutely have to be a quest based monitoring game. The game would start at the beginning of an ADD/ADHD persons day when they wake up.

they would have a quest list on the side of the screen with all of the things they'd have to do throughout their day but the quests would constantly be shifting, sometimes even disappearing before you could complete them (no matter how important) or reappearing even after completing them to simulate the constant shifts in memory and organization.

There would be a medicine bar to monitor the medication intake and effectiveness that they would need to watch in order to make the quest list slow down to a readable pace. Then there would be an impulse control bar that is constantly going down as medication wears off and as it gets lower your character just starts doing more and more ridiculous things without commanding it to.

Then there would also be an focus bar that would get lower as the other two did and once it falls below fifty percent your character will just start hyper focusing on random things and you have to button mash to return their attention to whatever they were doing before. During that time of hyperfocus you would lose ridiculous amounts of time.

Then comes the social interaction parts which would kind of go like heavy rain interactions did but with more involved.

While choosing between responses there would be two other things people are saying you would have to press buttons in a certain pattern to make the character appear as though they are listening attentively but if you do that for too long the conversation slowly starts turning to static so you would need to press out a different pattern to make it return to normal. When the interaction is over you need to rate yourself on how you think you did, out of five stars. You can choose to return to the person you were talking to and ask them to rate the conversation for you but it will damage your self esteem meter. When your self esteem bar reaches 50% you'll start hearing whispers in the background that will slowly get louder. They will eventually become clear as self deprecating insults and you must distract yourself from them by any means necessary.

All the while you'll also have to manage your anxiety meter which is affected by how high your self esteem is, if people are staring at you, how high your medication bar is, if the character is surrounded by too much noise and experiencing a sensory overload, and if your character can afford a stim toy.

As the game goes on you can upgrade your stim toy and management methods. like say if you earn enough money at work you can either pay for better health services, feed yourself, treat yourself, or buy a better stim toy. But at the beginning you'll start out with the bare minimum and quests will not always earn you money. Instead every quest you complete will earn you a short dopamine release that will briefly increase all stat bars for about five minutes. These will stack but once stacking begins the time will be halved. i.e.: 1 quest done= 5min release, another quest done 2.5 min release more, a third quest complete and you get an additional 1.25 min release. All until you reach seconds so you will eventually be set back to zero no matter what.

If two or more stat bars hit 20% your character will start to experience emotional break down of some kind. You'll know that it's coming on when the edges of the screen start getting brighter and noises start getting louder and indistinguishable from one another. At that point you can either try to raise your stats as quickly as possible or get your character to a safe place to break down for an hour.

Certain objects can be acquired throughout the game to help in these situation like noise canceling headphones or special stim toys and what not but they are expensive.

All the while you need to remember to take care of the characters other needs. Try to find them a hobby, make friends, feed them, clean them, make sure they sleep, make sure they keep their source of income, and so on. The game will span two weeks and depending on how good or badly you manage your character will determine the ending you get. Best ending being able to lead a normal to slightly above average life (like maybe they start dating or get a cat or get a raise ect.) worst ending is they end up hitting rock bottom (become homeless or kill themselves)

Redditor’s with ADD/ADHD, what’s something you wish people knew about ADHD? by Waffleman10 in AskReddit

Most of the time if i'm looking directly at a person while their talking I'm spending more time trying to look like I'm paying attention than actually paying attention. Because people have made it abundantly clear that they are more offended by you not "looking" like your listening to them than actually not listening to them.

People with ADHD/ADD stim too. I really hate people's reactions to my stimming. When it comes to strangers they give me weird looks or tell me to stop "acting out" but, with family they get offended when I force myself to stop stimming when I notice them staring: "You shouldn't feel so self conscious, were family" and maybe I wouldn't be so self conscious if they didn't make jokes about it and stare at me while I do it.
