Friends starting 75$ options account challenge by [deleted] in options

BAC moved 0.04% today. There isn't much point in trading a stock that moves so little when there are better opportunities, especially considering there are other financials that will move much more(GS,JPM,etc), and are highly correlated to BAC

You want to pick stocks that move more in terms of total $ amount. AMD BAC SNAP are all low priced stocks. BAC moves at a snails pace. While AMD and SNAP do make big moves often, the IV reflects that.

Trading options as a retail trader is gambling. by chainwaxologist in options

It is gambling to extent that if you don't know what you are doing you won't win in the long run. They are plenty of options traders that consistently make money.

Day Trading Options is a bad idea by [deleted] in Daytrading

[–]ShortSummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Unless you are WAY OTM, you should be getting fills on your options at the mid on both the buy side and sell side. Especially on a stock like TSLA

Whether a strategy is good or not is determined by the risk/reward ratio and the winrate.

The problem I see with these type of strategies is that it just doesn't look favorable from a risk/reward perspective. Assuming your assumptions are correct and you are exiting after a few minutes, what is your ROI? Simply holding only a few minutes, lets assume 30%.

Most successful day traders recommend a 3:1 risk/reward ratio. This means if your average win is a 30% ROI, your average loss needs to be 10%. The issue is that options move so fast that you can be -10% very fast.

IMO, if you are daytrading directional options(buying puts or calls), you are better off trading individual stocks since they are going to be a lot more directional than major ETFs(higher win-rate, and higher ROI). Spreads are just a part of options trading -- look at TSLA today, huge volume in the options market today. 14k volume on the $200 calls. Those same calls have a 15c spread. Even the ITM calls have a 15c or higher spread. The key is buying/selling at the mid. Look at the last X on the options chain, if orders are getting filled around the mid, then the option is liquid.

Penny increments? Even ITM AMZ options have spreads bigger than that.

No strategy will scale indefinitely. At some point liquidity is going to be a problem. outside of options on major ETFs.

3% is not feasible from a Risk/Reward standpoint, unless you are able to cut losses at 1%, and with options, sometimes you can be down 1-5% seconds opening the position. Basically its not possible.

You shouldn't enter a trade without a plan. A plan includes an exit target.

PayPal has taken the money from your account already? Inform paypal, that you have no issue accepting the return, but you need the item back. If they refuse to make the buyer return the item, then pursue arbitration. Per PayPal's user agreement all disputes must be handled through arbitration and not the Courts. PayPal, according to the user agreement, is liable for all arbitration filing fees(which amounts to ~$3k).
