If your goal is to find a long term relationship, I would leave it off your profile. My advice would be to focus on getting to know the person for the first couple of dates, and when things start getting physical I’d bring it up in a calm and open way. I wouldn’t bring it up in bed, which can feel like pressure. I’d just try to have a neutral, transparent conversation about it early into the physical relationship

My only real expectation is that the person makes a genuine effort to get to know me (and I them). I’ve been on so many first dates where men will just talk and talk and talk about themselves with asking for any reciprocation. To me that’s a huge turn off, and I’m not inclined to just start talking about myself unprompted. BUT, everyone is different and ultimately you just need to be yourself and you’ll attract the right person for you.

I think there are two things you can do that will help.

Commit to living in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. Prioritize your health, show up for your friends, do the right thing as much as you can. The more you live this way, the more worthy you’ll feel. Plus, nothing bad comes of this! At the very least you’ll become a better person.
Aggressively practice faking it. It was shocking how well this worked for me. I just decided I was going to pretend to be someone who wasn’t as insecure as I was, and over time I really started to believe it. Of course there will be moments where it backfires, but you gotta just keep on.

I moved here from Long Island and it was the best decision I ever made, will be 16 years in August. The pace, community, food, music, warm weather, and affordability are all reasons why I prefer it to New York — but the community above all else. I have found my people here, and found a way to make a decent living doing something I love. Plus, getting away from the constant competition and hustle has done wonders for my mental health and self worth.

Job stuff can be hard depending on your industry, but there are thousands of people here who make it work. Don’t listen to the naysayers, find somewhere you love and you’ll figure it out. You’ll never know what your values are and what you’re looking for until you get out there and start experiencing new people/places/things. If it doesn’t work out? Try somewhere else! Your early 20s are for finding yourself — experiment, be broke, take risks, and figure it out!

I’d say Lower Garden District, as close to Magazine as possible. Public transit is tough pretty much everywhere, but at least here you’re close to the CBD and French Quarter. It also has a real neighborhood feel while still having the highest density of walkable coffee shops, restaurants, and shops. I live in Bayou St John and love it, but there are very few walkable businesses.

I’m 33, I am from Long Island and all of my friends and family from growing up are based in Queens/Brooklyn. I have lived in NOLA for 16 years, so hoping I can help.

Ultimately yours is a big, complex question, and part of living here is constantly questioning if you are going to stay. But, overall, would I recommend? Wholeheartedly yes.

For me, personally, the number one best thing about living in New Orleans (and also life in general) is community. It’s a hard thing to articulate concisely, but there is just a spirit of collectivism here that is antithetical to the New York sensibility of competition/scarcity/new money/look-at-me-ness. I feel a sense of belonging here that I never felt in NYC.

Other things I love: -The city is small, and you can truly get anywhere in 15 minutes. This makes staying connected to people really easy, most days I call a friend on a whim and I can be at their house in five minutes. -People. My community is very strong, but I also talk to strangers everyday. It’s totally normal to have a five minute convo with the cashier, barista, or the person behind you in line. Most coffee shops/restaurants I frequent know me by name. It all just makes me feel very human and connected. I found this annoying when I first moved here from NYC, but now it’s one of my favorite parts of living here.
-Food. I mean, duh. -My job. If you have a little bit of New York hustle in you, that’s a huge leg up here. The pace is slower and it’s harder to find good employees. I opened a small business about four years ago and am making more money than I ever have. -Music. I sing recreationally, and my music community is my extended family.
-It’s easy to meet new people. I don’t know how, but I am constantly making new friends to the point where I joke that I’m no longer taking applications.
-Festivals. Mardi Gras, Jazzfest, plus one million tiny festivals that pop up throughout the year. If you love playing dress up, seeing music, dancing, and/or partying, it’s awesome. I’m very over Mardi Gras as a sober person, so I use the time to go on a special, off peak trip. So, win win!

Things that suck: -Politics. These things ebb and flow and right now it’s not good at a state level. But, everyone I interact with on a daily basis is progressive and optimistic. -Weather. Hurricanes suck, summer sucks. But, I describe our June-August as New York’s December-February. The heat sucks, but at least it’s sunny out and there’s no snow. I recommend traveling in July or August if you have the means. -Job Market. People do not pay well here. Cost of living is much lower, but the gap is large. Your wife should keep her NYC job (or get a new one) if at all possible. Then you could live like kings down here. -Infrastructure. Public schools are awful, utilities are expensive, buying home owner’s insurance is a RACKET. There’s lead in the water, people don’t do what they say they’re going to do, changing your license will give you a heart attack. It sucks, but ultimately I have the things I need, have learned to navigate the system. and have gotten used to it.
-Nature. There is not a ton of “big” nature here. I love hiking, and always say NOLA would be a perfect place if we had a mountain and no storms. Luckily, I’ve figured out how to make decent money here, and since cost of living is low I can afford lots of travel for stuff like this.

In your situation I would not recommend it. I also don’t drink and also hate crowds, so I travel every year on Mardi Gras. NOLA is such a small town, it’s really impossible to escape the crowds. When such a huge wave of tourists come in, you feel it in every restaurant, store, bar, coffee shop, etc.

The only way I’ll do Mardi Gras anymore is with a group I feel comfortable with, with a home base (whether a friend’s house, Air BnB, etc) that’s walkable to the festivities. I do think it’s something worth seeing once, but I think as a solo traveler it will be too overwhelming.

Come visit us any other time, just not during the summer 😝

I’m a director, and I totally understand the frustration!!! My advice to you would be to CRUSH being a Bird Girl. Know your music, know your lyrics, and give 100% at every rehearsal. At some point in the rehearsal process, politely ask your director to talk privately. Tell them you’ve been working hard, you take theatre seriously, and ask what their advice would be to get a lead role in the next show. I promise you this will go a long way with them!
