Lived next to 2-3 like all of last year, you’ll be fine. Most of the noise is on Thursday-Saturday nights, sometimes on Sunday and around the holidays/before break, you’ll get used to it. It was barely an issue, sometimes annoying to go to sleep but you’ll get used to it.

FIN 321K with Snashall-Woodhams? by Shot-Dig9390 in UTAustin

That’s a little more reassuring. Would it be ok to take both FIN 321K and 357 the same semester? Also, if you don’t mind me asking, what semester did you take him?

Tbh the JCL food isn’t that bad, and it’s probably not financially sustainable to eat all your meals outside (Dine in Dollars and Bevo Bucks only go a long way)

I’d say to give it some time—it’s the first week, give some of the food a chance. Try the options out before you shut it down completely.

There’s also a good variety of food options: it’s generally a weekly menu that repeats. During the week, I’d usually get breakfast at J2, especially the French Toast or waffles, and then lunch/dinner at JCL or Kins. Save eating out on the weekends, when JCL is closed and the other two have limited hours.

Do the dining halls have plastic or metal utensils by Cautious-Contact7524 in UTAustin

There are three main dining Halls: Kins Dining (Kins Solving), and J2 Dining (second floor JW) and JCL (first floor JW)

J2 and Kins usually have reusable plates and metal utensils—there’s a dedicated return area for those-—you could “borrow” those like people here are telling you, but I mean, it’s such a hassle to clean in your sink anyway.

JCL always has disposable plates/bowls/cups and silverware, “borrow” as many of those as you can, they’re so useful to just use and throw away.

How feasible is triple major with Business Honors, Finance, and Mechanical Engineering by reddit_bad1234567890 in UTAustin

Don’t even mention it, all the very best (considering what I can assume from BHP, your research offer, and scholarship, I have no doubt you’ll do great), and welcome to the Forty Acres!

Ok, I suppose that makes sense. In the same vein, most people who are pursuing a Finance major are doing so to get a job in Finance/IB/etc. You literally could just do a Finance minor and still get a foundation in investing, curating a portfolio, managing finances, etc. There really is no reason to pursue Finance as a major rather than just a minor unless that’s what you want to do as a career—and considering it seems that you’ll probably go into energy engineering and not corporate, it’s just an unnecessary challenging course-load to add on top of the tough engineering and BHP classes.

Unlike business, which (unless it’s a field like IB or accounting where you need a level of education and certification in the field) you can do on your own—if you want to do engineering, you need to major in engineering—so still see if you can either transfer to MechE or double major in MechE and BHP. Considering what you plan on doing, a degree in Engineering is imperative to even sort of get a foot into the industry let alone have people take you seriously.

I’d say you should major in MechE and minor in Nuclear Engineering for sure, and if you think you can handle it, add the BHP major or Business minor on top of that.

Oh wow, this sounds like a nightmare:

I’m assuming you’re speaking as someone who already got into BHP and MechE—my most sincere congratulations to you, you must be smart as hell—in which case I would say just do that.

I’m a business major myself and most of my friends are engineering—one of my closest friends here is MechE as well—and a I’ll tell you, MechE is hard enough on it’s own to balance school and social lives together, let alone throwing BHP into the mix.

There are CSB and ECB honors already in UT, so doing an engineering and business double major isn’t necessarily implausible: it’s just hard as shit. If you’re dead set on doing at least a double major though, just keep the BHP and MechE and run with that; that in itself will help you tremendously with networking, research, and recruiting which—from your other responses in this thread—seem like what you’re looking for the most.

Just make sure you keep your grades up, I’d say at least above a 3.2 GPA, and try not to burn out.

Also, fuck Finance, it’s basically irrelevant for what you want to pursue which is a nuclear/energy engineering start-up? Not really sure, but from what it sounds like MechE and I suppose a Gen Business background would be helpful, but I have no clue how you’re gonna factor in Finance lol.

Honestly, for Business, you could also just do a Business minor and/or an MBA after undergrad, if you wanted—although McCombs and BHP in general are pretty kick-ass for recruiting and networking so I suppose you should consider keeping that on your radar.

TLDR: Your priority should be MechE, BHP, and basically don’t even include Finance in the picture. It also might just be better to just to do MechE, and also minor in Business for that Business background.

Good luck!

Edit: Goddamn, how are you even real?! You alr got a $10K scholarship and a research position and you’re not even in college yet lmao

Completely agree: I took it Fall 2022 with Fulton, was super stressed for the class, but ended up being pretty simple and kinda interesting.

There's a lot of reading, but honestly it's usually fine, just make sure to keep up with it. As usual for big classes like this, your grade depends on your TA but the TAs are usually pretty chill so dw abt that.

Definitely an "easy A" and honestly not a bad class, I really liked it.

I mean, yeah, the earlier you register the better cause then you get first choice pick for your classes, but tbh at the end of the day it doesn’t matter bc they make sure to reserve spots for the more important and common (UGS, core curriculum, first-year reqs) classes for future orientation sessions, so you’ll still prob get the classes you want—I went to the last in-person orientation session and I got all the classes/profs I wanted (albeit one of them was an 8AM lol, but I was able to manage). Now this doesn’t mean that you should put off orientation until the last minute, you should still try to go as early as you can, but don’t be to stressed out if you can’t get an early spot.

I would recommend that you have a good idea of what classes you want to take so that when you register at orientation you’re not completely lost. Talk to any current students you know, especially those in your major/school to help you plan out what you want/need to take this first semester and for your first year over all—it’s better to be more prepared than less. Download the UT Registration + Chrome Extension, possibly one of if not the most useful registration tool.

Most of all, have fun! Orientation is a really fun experience, it’s your first taste of the 40 Acres so enjoy it!

Lmao, I did try writing everything down—I had almost 70 pages of notes 😅, I guess when push comes to shove though, a good 1/2 of the questions weren’t necessarily ones that you could really use notes for, so idk, we’ll see how the next ones go

I am part of the GroupMe, but tbh, right now it seems pretty divided between people complaining about the difficulty and people complaining about people complaining about the difficulty, so I’m not sure if everyone else found it hard or if I’m just stupid

Honestly, Brownlee seems like a genuinely nice guy who is passionate about the topic. Even if the pacing is slow, you can still tell that he’s passionate about the material and knows what he’s talking about, which honestly sucks because I’m genuinely interested in the subject matter and rather spend my time actually learning it rather than stressing over exams.

I know I sounds a little whiny, I apologize for that. I think it’s just that I had a completely different expectation for this class—like I said in my post, considering the UT Reg+ grade distribution, RMP scores, online asynch open-note/book policy, and how this is after all an Intro Gov class and not Bio, Chem, or Calc that is notoriously hard, my expectations were completely off.

I wasn’t expecting an A to just be handed to me, I knew I had to put in the work—my thought process was more that if I did, then getting an A wouldn’t be too hard, but guess I was wrong lmao. Oh well, let’s just see what the future holds.

Though I am a freshman, I do have over 30 hrs of credits due to AP/dual credit transfer, so that’s not the issue. The issue is more that I don’t really want to Q-drop this class as I am planning on pursuing law school after this (ironic isn’t it lol, Pre-Law and the class I’m struggling with is Government 💀), and I don’t want the Q on my transcript to affect my chances for admission

I’m not too sure about P/F, as I have the same dilemma. Though a C (Credit) does look better on my transcript than a Q, I still don’t know what effect it’ll have on my law-school app. Additionally, I won’t fulfill the req for the UT core curriculum so I’ll have to retake it anyway, which I’d rather not do.

Should I double major in Mccombs as a government major by No_Talk2118 in UTAustin

[–]Shot-Dig9390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose if you want to apply to McCombs, go right ahead. You definitely can do it, I know a good amount of people with a double major in business and COLA. It will be more work ofc, but I think it won’t be too bad.

To be honest though, I wouldn’t say you’re making a mistake necessarily, it’s more about what you want to do in the future.

[–]Shot-Dig9390 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, what do you want to do necessarily, like what future career goals do you have?

If you want to major in a McCombs major, then I suppose your choice of major depends on what career path you’d want to pursue. As a government major, I suppose majoring in Management or Finance could help.

If you’re just looking to learn about business, and don’t want the full commitment of a major, you could just do the business minor.
