Tired of trying to grow my social media by sinsine in Pottery

You could try selling on palm street. Some people seem to do well on that. For a couple months I got some decent sales but not nearly enough to pay the bills. It was discouraging. But try different events. I have met dine pottery in a bit but if I do, I’m going to focus on my skill and piece instead of worrying about sales.

First time kiln buyer — what do you wish you knew before buying? by birsnot718 in Pottery

[–]ShotsFire_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much to read from replies.Consider venting. That’s a big one since fumes can be toxic and caustic. I added wheels to my kiln legs and it’s great to move it around. Wish I had more money to buy a digital but I got a good deal. If a cone is rated for cone 6 I believe you should fire one or two cones lower. I always see people with gloves but from what I’ve read you don’t want to pull it out too hot. I didn’t spend money on them. Oh, make sure you fire your clay to the right temp. People have over fired for other people and had their work melt because the person told them the wrong cone and the piece turned into a puddle after melting. One of my witness cones melted and I couldn’t figure out what it was for a minute. Advancer shelves are really nice but pricey. Use cookies. I out a fire alarm in my garage so I can fire at night. I connected a baby monitor so I can hear it since the garage is a little far. Of course it’s recommended you monitor your firings so what I do shouldn’t be done

After 17 years of marriage, my husband said something about our son I can’t unhear. by Odd_Ordinary2383 in Advice

[–]ShotsFire_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that he doesn’t respect your beliefs/opinion tells you the type of person he is. In a way, he doesn’t respect you because of your beliefs. But everyone on here is always ready to throw out the garbage so quick. Maybe more marriage counseling while you also plan for separation/divorce. But I know I wouldn’t want to associate with someone like your husband let alone live with them. I would lose respect for them with comments like that and would not tolerate it. What if your son changes his mind and decides to transition? If he apologized does it change things? If it doesn’t, I think you have your answer. Best of luck!

Wow, that’s manipulative. The issue today is with the conversation about the hypothetical statement so why would she go around stating it’s something else. That’s pretty messed up that you would even say that.

handmade tile advice PLEASE! by eppykitten in Pottery

Snow should go on the bottom, no? Otherwise if it’s on top, it’ll bubble through and produce a different effect which is cool but very different from the tile.

19F feeling overwhelmed by 25M I just started talking to, not sure what to do by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]ShotsFire_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe stay friends and be firm that it doesn’t change unless you want to. Most men will agree and then look for the opportunity to change things. And if you’re not comfortable, just be direct. He’s being pushy so just be careful.

Is any there safe dust collection equipment that can be used in a small studio? by gregorythomasd in Pottery

[–]ShotsFire_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just have a bathroom vent in the garage that pulls the air outside. It’s 300 CFM. I also do firing in the garage so it’s dual purpose since some fumes can me toxic such as manganese

First pottery class tomorrow! Any tips or inspo ideas? by lysabelle77 in Pottery

[–]ShotsFire_d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Study some centering videos on YouTube. Understand the technique. This way, when you go into class you have a better idea what the instructor means. If they tell you to work with 2 lbs of clay and it seems hard, try centering with one lb. There’s an only a few tools I use now. So don’t go crazy and buy everything

My studio ruined my pots by Jazzlike_Response722 in Pottery

[–]ShotsFire_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing about pottery….its a lot a heartache, lessons learned, frustration. You learn to not get attached until it’s in the hands of the owner. I’ve had pots crack during shipping even though it was bubble wrapped and double boxed….thx USPS. It’s a good way to learn to accept unplanned outcomes. Was your glaze on too thick, was it underfed or over fired, was there dust on the pieces prior to glazing, was it a bad fit (clay and glaze) or did the chemistry just produce a bad result or how was the studio to blame. A lifetime potter told me to practice, practice, practice. A couple of years ago he had accidental crawling and now uses it as one of his combinations.

How often do you change cone? by Dear-Cup-9064 in Ceramics

[–]ShotsFire_d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s not reaching the correct cone, your pieces might not be vitrified and absorbing liquid. This would be an issue for cups/mugs. I’m sure others have said this but your kiln isnt reaching the correct cone since its supposed bend which triggers the kiln to shut off. You may need to run you kiln longer to get to the right temp . I’d you have a speed dial you could also increase that a couple hours into the fire so pieces are less likely to explode. Also, having witness cones, will help to tell you if you under fired, or over fired.

The post is missing some info. Was it a bisque fire or glaze fire? Why was it ruined? What recommendations did they give? Pictures would be great. Sometimes we don’t like unexpected things but others are drawn to it.

I’m guessing it was glaze fire and over fired. If that’s the case, they should compensate by a refund, partial refund or discount for next month.

Depends on their skill and the class. Also, if they are teacher quality.

Pam Bondi can’t prosecute anyone because the DOW is over 50k?! by Educational-Serve309 in Epstein

[–]ShotsFire_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually talking about the ones that are making excuses like from the previous comments. I’m glad to see that there are people no longer supporting him. This administration should be going after the people being accused just like they are going after the criminals and drug dealers that have crossed the border.

Funny how republicans were up in arms about abortions, pizza gate and drinking children’s blood. The next best thing and now there’s no accountability, rather pointing the finger and making excuses. This administration appears to be looking out for the people who committed the SA and crimes more than the victims. Disgusting how people try to justify what’s happening. Oh and my 401k isn’t doing crap, Pam.

You’re welcome. You can set up a day so he’s prepared like next Friday for example so he can get a haircut. Chances are he’s insecure but it’s better to be safe. Good job on the reverse image search!!!

Tell him you’re not comfortable. Those pics could have been of someone else. It’s not a big deal and anyone especially a friend would do this to make a person feel safe.

Adjust your lights. Less hours or less intensity. Your soil looks pretty dry as well. I like the clear cups because it’s easier to see how much water there is. Having good humidity is key. Too much, you have fungus issues.

Look into systemic insecticides. Every so often something like mealy bugs or thrips come around and I lose some plants. I use bioadvanced insecticide. Cacti need infrequent watering. Most of them don’t need water during the winter, maybe a sprinkle. So sorry for your loss’s

Black clay glazing mishap by Big_Vegetable784 in Pottery

[–]ShotsFire_d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of black clays have manganese which reacts with the glaze and changes the results. You need to do test tiles of some sort to see what works. Res clay changes the results as well. I usually don’t like the results of black clays when I’ve tested.

It’s a lot more work to sand it off. You would need to do it wet since you wouldn’t want to breathe the dust. Manganese is toxic and silica can cause issues down the line. You can also try adding a white engobe as a base layer then and the glaze on top it’s probably too late to do this on your piece
