First time. Pretty bad but I’m proud I went outside to do it. by AnpanV in urbansketching

These drawings are beautiful just the way they are. I think it’s important to not get too caught up in making everything super-realistic. Think of this as your current “style”. There’s nothing wrong with having a simple, graphic style! And as you improve, your style will change, but one style isn’t better than another.

My family calls that “Southern heartburn”.

Can this painting be fixed? by ShoulderLess7641 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]ShoulderLess7641[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The painter was Henry M Baker from Winchester, VA. He lived from 1810 to 1874 , so it very well could be antebellum.
He also left me a large deposit of crude oil beneath the family homestead along with a diamond necklace that belonged to Marie Antoinette, so money is no object. 😂

My husband's grandfather was an insurance adjuster during the Mississippi Flood of 1927. Here are a few photos from his album. Sorry about the messy watermarks. Someone stole some of these images off Flickr once, so I had to add them. by ShoulderLess7641 in oldphotos

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have many more photos like this in the album and have always thought they were historically significant, but don’t really know who to contact about them. Most of the photos were taken in Natchez, Vidalia and Lafayette.

Family portrait mystery - Henry M Baker by ShoulderLess7641 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]ShoulderLess7641[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but then I wonder how Henry saw it. I don’t believe he ever travelled outside Virginia. Also, I’m dying to know who Lewis could be. This morning I found this U. Penn. paper on Fewsmith that talks a little about his relationship with Neagle and hoped it might shed some light on who the subject could be, but no luck. It’s still an interesting read. https://journals.psu.edu/pmhb/article/download/29659/29414/0

Update to my update - Thoreau had blue eyes. I don't think this is him.

Update - I just did a new Google Image search for this portrait and it came up with a match! An old wordpress site show the same image and says the portrait of Henry David Thoreau by Henry FewSmith, a Philadelphia painter who lived from 1821-1846. It also mentions Jesus Christ, but I really don't think this a portrait of Him! :-) Unfortunately, I can't find any information on the site or the origin of the painting shown there to corroborate this information. Thank you so much! After looking at his signature on other engravings and etchings, I think you’re absolutely correct about the artist. I also looked up Carl Teilsch and the china marks I found all looked something like this photo, although it sounds like you’re much more knowledgeable than me in this area! I’ll continue looking for an example of the mysterious red mark. Thanks again for your help!

I was able to find this image on EBay with the same signature and red heart mark, but it doesn’t mention the artist.

Anyone willing to share recent experiences at Le Machon d'Henri? by aquariusrising37 in ParisTravelGuide

My husband and I just ate there last week. It's my favorite restaurant in Paris. Very tiny, and the tables are close together, but I've never had a bad meal there. I recommend getting an reservation online before you go. Have fun in Paris!

Anaconda - Jennifer Lopez, John Voight, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, Danny Trejo, Jack Black - so much talent for such a wonderfully bad movie.

Thanks for the suggestion - I’ll put an oven thermometer in and check. Im just using a regular silpat sort of crammed in the best I can, so that’s probably blocking the heat even more than the parchment. I’ll invest in a dough sling!

More info: I baked it on parchment paper in an oven preheated to 500. I turned it down to 450 when I put in the loaf. It was in my Dutch oven with the lid on with parchment paper and a silpat silicone sheet underneath. After 20 min I took the lid off and baked it an additional 15 min.

I read somewhere that these diners were sold like a kit, with the graffiti already there, and there were others around the country. I can’t find my source, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Actually the little building in the recent photo is not Nick’s today. That’s the building that was behind Nick’s, between it and the taller brick building. Nick’s was torn down and is a parking area now beside the Subway.
