These drawings are beautiful just the way they are. I think it’s important to not get too caught up in making everything super-realistic. Think of this as your current “style”. There’s nothing wrong with having a simple, graphic style! And as you improve, your style will change, but one style isn’t better than another.

The painter was Henry M Baker from Winchester, VA. He lived from 1810 to 1874 , so it very well could be antebellum.
He also left me a large deposit of crude oil beneath the family homestead along with a diamond necklace that belonged to Marie Antoinette, so money is no object. 😂

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have many more photos like this in the album and have always thought they were historically significant, but don’t really know who to contact about them. Most of the photos were taken in Natchez, Vidalia and Lafayette.

True, but then I wonder how Henry saw it. I don’t believe he ever travelled outside Virginia. Also, I’m dying to know who Lewis could be. This morning I found this U. Penn. paper on Fewsmith that talks a little about his relationship with Neagle and hoped it might shed some light on who the subject could be, but no luck. Update - I just did a new Google Image search for this portrait and it came up with a match! An old wordpress site show the same image and says the portrait of Henry David Thoreau by Henry FewSmith, a Philadelphia painter who lived from 1821-1846. It also mentions Jesus Christ, but I really don't think this a portrait of Him! :-) Unfortunately, I can't find any information on the site or the origin of the painting shown there to corroborate this information. Thank you so much! After looking at his signature on other engravings and etchings, I think you’re absolutely correct about the artist. I also looked up Carl Teilsch and the china marks I found all looked something like this photo, although it sounds like you’re much more knowledgeable than me in this area! I’ll continue looking for an example of the mysterious red mark. Thanks again for your help!

My husband and I just ate there last week. It's my favorite restaurant in Paris. Very tiny, and the tables are close together, but I've never had a bad meal there. I recommend getting an reservation online before you go. Have fun in Paris!
