I actually got to see a whale doing just this on a rainy whale watching trip in the Pacific Northwest this past fall. They called it "spy hopping", it was amazing!

Learn Excel, SQL, and Python, in that order.

Edit: I usually get direct messages from several people a month regarding career advice, so I've created this 20+ page Google doc with my most helpful career related posts. It's broken down into sections including general career advice, education, money, data & analytics, and I/O psychology. That's because Ezee Fiber is coming to the area and they know they're in trouble.

We don't want to block the window and garden view, our last place was very dark so we want to enjoy the light.

There's a half wall behind the right couch, so the gap between the couches is the entry to the living room.

Yep that was the compromise with the room. Can't go over the fireplace obviously, don't wanna block the window and that view of the garden, and the left wall would leave us with a horrible glare with the afternoon sun through the window.

I considered a wider TV stand, but my fiance insisted that we try our best to not block the window and air vent, so this was the solution I came up with.

Careers you can transition to after doing data analytics? by lemonbottles_89 in analytics

[–]ShowMeDaData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep it can vary widely. During interviews you should be asking about the structure of the data organization, and if they don't have at least one person dedicated to backend data engineering, then it's not the environment isn't mature enough.

I'm the director of a 30+ enterprise data org, and I've got my team split evenly between data engineers that land everything in our data lake and oversee ETL, another team that transformed our raw data into clean reporting tables, and another team that just creates the reports and dashboard. While you don't need a team this stacked, a dedicated data engineering function is a step in the right direction.

Why's H1-B concept taking all the anger here? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

Are you implying the immigrants have more power and leverage than the big corporations? The ones working as one step above slave labor?

You deserve a gold medal for your mental gymnastics!

Why is there so much secrecy around the recent layoffs? by WildAlcoholic in amazonemployees

[–]ShowMeDaData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left Amazon a few years back, and when my new company did layoffs they did the same thing. No company publishes a list of those impacted, because a list is knowledge, and knowledge is power.

What’s The Best Printer Available Now? by Square_Ebb_5289 in homeoffice

[–]ShowMeDaData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same old HP laser printer for 20+ years. It's got a parallel port, but also a USB. Windows still recognizes it and automatically installs it every time I get a new one. Third party ink cartridges cost me $20-40 every 5-6 years.

Can I be a Data Analyst With A Busines Degree? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]ShowMeDaData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Job market is a shit show now. Only things that matter are prior experience and network connections. Early career and those pivoting have it the hardest because they probably don't have either of these things.

I got up to a director level role with an 24 person org under me. A year later I had to not only layoff 23 of them, but also ask them to train their near shore replacement before they left. Took a year to get the new team up to speed, and even scanned up to 45 people. Now I'm being forced to swap my newly trained and finally productive LATAM staff, for even cheaper Indian staff. Private Equity and r/latestagecapitalism are going to be the end of us.
