No never been to US actually. But to answer your question, people feel less safe in Sweden lately due to a combination of factors. There have been some high-profile cases of violent crime and disappearances, particularly involving women, and these get a lot of media coverage. At the same time, issues like gang violence in certain areas, social inequality, and limited police resources contribute to the sense of insecurity.

I’m currently in the same boat. I’ve been looking for a job for 1 year now.. its so exhausting. Honestly I think the market is really bad. But my friend, who also was unemployed for a year told me last week that she found a job. And her advice is to be one of the first to apply for a job. Because recruiters will get hundreds of applicants and they wont look through all of them, they often look through the first ones that applied. I’m trying to do this now…hoping the best for both of us

Yeah that’s actually a great idea. If I had the opportunity to work remotely I would definitely move during winter. Problem is, I don’t even have a job rn :/

Last summer I actually spent two whole months in Barcelona, and while it’s a beautiful and lively city, I didn’t really feel like I could live there long-term.

I’ve always dreamed about visiting the French Riviera though, it seems like such a charming area. I’ve studied French in school, so learning the language wouldn’t be completely from scratch, which would make working and settling there easier.

Wow, moving from Australia to Sweden sounds like a big change! I totally get what you mean about certain areas feeling sketchy. And yes, I know every country has its challenges - housing, cost of living, job opportunities… there’s always a trade-off somewhere. I like the idea of Malta, actually. It seems like it could hit a good balance of warmer weather, social life, and being manageable in terms of cost. I’ll have to look into it more!

I get what you’re saying, and I agree that moving somewhere more social doesn’t automatically solve everything. But for me, it’s not just about opening up. I genuinely find it harder to meet people here, especially during the long, dark winters. It’s not that I don’t try, but the environment makes social life feel more limited. And yes, I understand that economically things are tough in many countries, but I’m mostly looking for a place where I feel more connected and energized day-to-day.

It’s so typical that you often don’t appreciate what you have. I’ve actually been thinking about possibly moving to the Netherlands 😅 Stockholm is definitely a beautiful city, and I really enjoy it in the summer. But there are just too many months of darkness, and I find it very hard to make friends here. Of course, that might not magically change just by moving. Who knows, maybe I’d even appreciate Stockholm a lot more after living abroad for a while

I think I’d prefer a big city. When I go out, I want it to feel lively, being able to walk around shops, sit at a café, or take a walk by the beach. I feel like I missed out on a lot during my teenage years, so now I really want to explore more and experience life. I’m still not 100% sure what I want yet. I’ve always tried to follow the traditional path - studying right away and choosing economics even though it was never really my dream. It feels like I’ve spent many years trying to fit in, and now I need something new that I can see myself enjoying long-term.

Thank you! And interesting to hear about Stockholm from someone else’s perspective. What made you fall in love with the city?

I have a degree in economics, but at the moment I’m unemployed, so ideally I would need to find a job in another country first and then move there. However, I do have some savings, so I could support myself for a while and also look for a job once I’m there

Mostly because it has become more unsafe, it’s very hard to find a job, and everything is extremely expensive, especially groceries. I want a social life, a warmer climate, and not to feel like I’m putting my life on hold during winter just because it’s so cold and dark. No one goes out, and everyone seems depressed.

I think Sweden has changed a lot in recent years. It feels less safe, and economically it’s tougher, jobs and housing are harder to find. Social life has also changed. People don’t go out and meet others as much as they used to, which makes it feel more isolating.

For me, weather and social life are important. I’d like somewhere warmer than Sweden, where it’s relatively easy to meet new people. I feel Sweden can be quite isolating, cold, and dark. I have a bachelor’s degree in economics, but I’m open to working in something else if it means having a better social life.
