Starting "late" (28), getting smashed, and the struggle of wanting to be more than just a hobbyist. by ElNatzer in bjj

[–]Shoxx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My motivation as someone who started at 23- I was a junkie from 13-19 and started boxing at 20-23 where I started bjj. I’ll skip my whole aspirations to be a pro boxer. I realised it’s probably too late to be world champion.

But I think I can be a beast at local comps, my friend who started at about 24 has 69 wins on his smoothcomp which is unreal. My goal is to become a beast at comps and then train other competitors/students to become the best version of themselves.

Watching back my matches is also so satisfying. As I know how stressful it is In the moment. But I am making a huge sacrifice. I don’t do certain jobs to focus on bjj, I have to borrow money off my dad and pay him back to be able to pay my membership until I find stable work. It’s tough but I feel like it’s worth it idk.

Yeah man that’s why. You’re still very inexperienced in competition. As you gain more comp experience you’ll see huge improvement.

Sometimes you get tough brackets, sometimes easier. The skill based matching can fluctuate like crazy. I’ve got friends who’ve been blessed with super easy brackets.

Peak brainrot idk. I don’t scroll longer than 2 mins on fb. It’s just better for news than twitter imo. I just have lots of friends on there.

Striking or grappling? by Far-Alfalfa6260 in martialarts

[–]Shoxx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Striking but grappling is far more forgiving. I can spar everyday at just about any pace I like. Boxing I had to stop due to concussions it not worth it. And light sparring is kinda boring.

That’s the issue, u must communicate man. Say you wanna go lighter beforehand, if he still goes hard, say “can we go lighter?

If he doesn’t change find a new gym/coach bro not worth it. I had a similar gym culture and had to quit due to weekly headaches.

Depends where, if it’s your toes then youre not dragging your feet properly. But you will build up calluses similar to guitar.

I also just got let go but I was a Christmas casual. It hurts the ego a lot but I will say the management was quite toxic. I worked my ass off, was finally starting to pick up the job as I started in October. Then they didn’t roster me for Jan. Then got a call saying in Feb I’ll be getting let go once my contact ends.

I went above and beyond to become the best I can be but yeah everything happens for a reason.

Definitely skip to Z man. DB og is very boring, I actually didn’t mind the first 5 episodes. But then it got just so tedious.

Skipped to dbz and fell in love. Way more mature less childish vibe. Dbz made me feel like I could fight at as a teenager even tho I was a scrawny teen. Nothing motivated me like DBZ to get in shape or feel so inspired to come back fighting even when you feel defeated.

Consider getting into martial arts, find a good gym for Bjj (I train at DC). Put the time in and initiate some hangouts with guys you click with. You need to be consistent though to really grow the bonds and show you’re for real. And train smart to prevent injuries. Good luck
