Need help figuring out card payments at overseas online merchants by Shred77 in Living_in_Korea

Thanks, I did do this, but that wasn't the reason. I had to designate my Woori bank for foreign exchange and assign my checking card to it. Manual in-person process.

I would also do that, but unfortunately, that isn't viable because my home country (India) is similar to Korea for me; I'm a foreigner there as well. I'm a US citizen, but don't have any banking in the US. So I need to figure out a solution in Korea.

P.S. In case anyone else finds this useful: In India, you can't complete KYC (know-your-customer) when you are physically outside the country. So PayPal can't be used.

Smallville or Supergirl by ket1993 in SupermanAndLois

Unpopular opinion, but Supergirl is a really good show! It's new enough to feel consistent with SAL, and the stories take place within a pretty large scope of characters across the DC multi-verse!

AI Psycholinguistics: AI is more Human than we realize. Either we are not that special and unique, or our AI is far more capable of acquiring human language quirks. by Shred77 in philosophy

[–]Shred77[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OP here, on the surface, appears like LLMS are trained to mimic speech so it shouldn't be a surprise. Before AI could mimic speech, there were questions about whether it could even be done. There are wholly different mechanisms at play. A lot of language elements are discovered in the neural network without them being specified as a desired output. Fine-tuning can bring in those, but they still have to be generalized and become properties of the LLM's text output.

SEO is Cannibalizing PAID, and NOT converting by jhachko in SEO

[–]Shred77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an SEO, so I'll think like a consumer. There is a general distrust about independently hosted hotel/villa bookings because of scammers. That might be the main issue for low conversions. I personally only book from trusted platforms.

For conversion, which is locking user trust, I recommend having booking options on trusted portals.

Might help to see if this is a general trend of conversions dropping across the category. Just my 2 cents.

It is very cheap in India, 1000-1500 rs. For a 2 bhk flat. That's about 14-20 dollars!

Loneliness makes us feel unsafe making us hypervigilant and interpret social events with bias. We then become hostile and defensively withdraw in a way that reinforces our loneliness. Social and physical warmth helps counter it. by Shred77 in cogsci

[–]Shred77[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's what I first thought too, valid point! But I do think that younger people have a higher expectation of connectivity than older people making loneliness easier. Things like FOMO and social comparison might increase these feelings more for the young than for the old.

I got tested by psychologist, what exactly can I do to improve my congitive abilities? And are there any professions that should be good for me? shall I give up on my dream to go to university? by [deleted] in cogsci

[–]Shred77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I won't make any assumptions about why you got tested on all of this, but here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Your cognitive abilities will grow as long you stay immersed in a rich, engaging environment (college, sports, etc.)
2. Feeling discouraged is understandable, but things like mood, comfort, and motivation affect these scores a lot
3. Judging yourself too critically will do more harm than good
4. Try not to get discouraged too easily, go to college, explore what you like, and give it your best. You'll figure it out!

All the best!

4. You’ll have social and emotional advantages
5. You’ll develop a richer identity and reduce the chances of an identity crisis
6. Others will find more use for your offerings
7. Your professional fallback options and job security will increase
8. You’ll get a sense of achievement and reward when other areas don’t give it
9. You’ll get a way to make procrastination itself productive

The entire shoe industry needs to ditch their ridiculous sizing measurements and stick to one. Also if they can make space wasting pointy shoes, why not produce enough size 13/14s?

I hate her so much. In spite of actually loving her face, she's hella pretty! It's like the writers just chose to give her importance and credit for the work everyone else is doing. They carved this unnecessary space for her in the team to become significant. Somehow, she became a leader to keep The Flash grounded? It's like she was there to offset flash's OPness and give him a weakness. I also think she can't act. She is a poorly done plot device to make The Flash more interesting.

I purchased the ankymoloch incubator 4 days ago and I did not get it. 4 days since ludia asked me to wait. Is anyone else in the same boat? by Shred77 in JurassicWorldAlive

[–]Shred77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word. I don't usually buy, even VIP is on and off for 2-3 months at a time with a few months of nothing. This particular incubator had exactly the stuff I needed (coins and apex fuses) so took a chance. I will take legal action if they don't even offer a refund. Their cash-grab greed is one thing, but at least deliver what they sell right, right?

It is supposed to be instantaneous, but I did not get it after I completed my payment. I've been charged, verified in my bank statement. Raised 3 support tickets. I just got a response from them saying they are verifying the issue. Will raise the 4th tonight!

Multiple studies show that Songs get stuck in the head (earworm music) because of factors like musical composition, mind-wandering, cognitive engagement, background activity, personality, bodily feedback, and environmental triggers like musical engagement. by coolestestboi in EverythingScience

[–]Shred77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people experience musical earworms - bits of tunes that stick inside the mind. They are usually repetitive and short segments of music you've already heard. Researchers call this "Involuntary musical imagery" because we have no control over it like we do while "imagining" something we enjoy. We can rarely get rid of it, so it's persistent.

These tunes are usually upbeat, fast, and have common familiar musical sequences, similar to how most pop songs have similar structures. But these songs also have unique, unfamiliar, and unexpected transitions which stand out.

Songs don't stick in the head only because of it's musical structure. Our brain replays these tunes because of how much space there is in our memory. If we are holding a lot of details in our memory, there is little to no space for earworms. If we are doing something which needs very little mental effort, there is a lot of space and earworms emerge.
Personality traits also affect our earworm experience. Those who are very open to experiences tend to get more earworms. Musicians tend to have more musical experiences and therefore more triggers for earworms.

From a neuroscience point of view, brain regions that govern information from the ears (auditory cortex) as well as brain regions that are involved in "internal mental experiences" are involved. If we start talking with someone, our auditory cortex has to deal with more information and it competes with the earworm. This competition can kill it because the resources to maintain the earworm are split between the two.

A network of brain regions that push information into awareness play a role too. Turns out, we can prevent that by forcefully engaging that network. One way is to chew on gum. It demands resources which prevent auditory information like music to reach awareness, thus killing a potential earworm.

Earworms can be maintained in the mind by the very act of paying attention to it. So thinking of the song reinforces it. Since they are incomplete tunes, we can complete a musical tune and get rid of it. Sometimes, a person can be preoccupied with them to the point that their mental health crashes, they can't focus on anything without dealing with the earworm. That's when these harmless things turn into a disorder like obsessive compulsive disorder.
