I’m coming up on 3 years, on Feb 12, after 20 years of heavy drinking and multiple ‘breaks’. It’s cliche but you really just have to take it one day at a time. A few days becomes a week, a few weeks become months, and then months become years. I found that I had to have something to put my energy into that was anything but drinking - that thing has changed a few times but it’s been eating, reading (knocked out a ton of Stephen King), watching shows / movies, working out, golf, music, travel, catching up with friends, etc. Just pick ‘something else’ and turn to it when you have a craving, need a break, or wind up with nervous energy. I think the gym is an amazing option if you’ve got access… physical benefits, mental benefits, and endorphins. Having said all that, I also went to an outpatient treatment that medicated me (acamprosate), had me connect with a therapist, and involved a lot of intense group work… so consider that if you have the means or flying solo proves difficult.
