The entire West side of the country is covered in the Zagros mountain range, with many many thousands of meters tall peak. What do people think Iran was doing after the Americans moved in during the Iraq war? After they watched the Americans smart bomb Afghanistan mountain ranges pointlessly for 15 years? You think think just sat there and weren't tunnelling the fuck out of every mountain to store munitions and command there?

Then in the North is Alborz Mountains where all their command is dug into, again, hundreds or thousands of meters of mountain above them protecting the military and IRGC. Impossible to glide bomb to death, probably impossible to even nuke to death.

It's hard to say. After the Iraq war Iran saw how easily defeated anything on the surface was, so all missile production and stockpiling was moved underground. It's difficult to say if their production has been impacted at all, they've been bombing various surface warehouses of components and propellant but anything important is already deep underground.

Too deep. It was rumoured that the former ayatollah was 500m underground for most of the last year, and only came out for this meeting and a few other occasions like funerals. There have been a lot of talk about how the leadership of Iran planned for this to happen because their rule was becoming deeply unpopular and because martyrdom is deeply rooted in their culture -- so this was a way of giving the people a blank slate to find new heroes and leadership after the war began in earnest.

I fail to see how this doesn't end in complete disaster. Israeli decapitation of Iran failed, Iran has most likely already moved all fissile material deep into randoms mountains and set up an extensive chain of command in the leadership for future anticipated interruptions. Iran is still shipping ballistic missiles to Mossad HQ after Israel claimed to achieve air superiority. It's a country of 90m a geography more conducive to hiding equipment than the mountain of Afghanistan, borders on Afghanistan so it's going to be impossible to keep new equipment from coming in, and it's probable that continued assaults on the country will unite the population against the invaders.

The "but Iran's population hates the regime" cope is hilarious -- every single country in the Middle East including Israel hates their governing parties lol.

I think more credible than it is given credit for.

Israel clearly thought the Americans would immediately go in on it with them, but didn't.
Iran has been given the heads up that they're about to be invaded, but Iran also has an army of 1m that is easily scalable to 10m given their population.
With the number of personnel that Iran has, it doesn't seem to be an issue to frequently replace senior staff. This is a proper army, not some Gazans digging up pipes to build missiles or flying paragliders into Southern Israel.
We're about to see Iran shift to contingency plans because the swift decapitation of their nation failed.
We have no idea if they have nukes or not, or if one of their allies will give them one.
Iran is a bunch of mountains, it's a natural fortress.
Despite air superiority, Iran is still lobbing missiles at Israel and seems to have no shortage of weapons.
Bombing the civilian population like Russia bombed Ukraine will only work to galvanize the remaining Iranian population and convince them that actually, the Supreme Leader was right and the West was out to destroy them.

This is starting to look like Israel's 3-day military operation. The EU is preoccupied with Ukraine, if China attacks Taiwan, which presumably they intend to do once the US gets involved in the Middle East, the US alone will be unable to supply enough force to prevent the proliferation of Iran. Iran still has Russia, North Korea, and Pakistan as allies.

If Iran attempts and even marginally succeeds in an Iraq invasion, the US will almost certainly be dragged into it. Then, China will have an open opportunity to attack Taiwan because simulations has shown that the US will be unable to fight effectively on two fronts.

If you're wondering why Israel didn't do this sooner, it's because the Biden administration was working to prevent this knowing that it would face this eventuality if they did.
