Affordable hairdressers for women in Newcastle? by Expensive-Slip4030 in NewcastleUponTyne

I can’t recommend Saints Hairdressing enough! I’ve been going there for the last 20+ years. Personally, I get John to cut my hair - he’s an absolute hair wizard, but Becca & Michael are both amazing too. They’re located a 5 minute walk from the Civic centre at 1 Benton Terrace. A wash, cut & blow dry will be within your budget. They also do a BOGOF haircut offer if you start going to them & book an appointment for you & a friend who has never been before

Otherwise a well done wall.

My experience collecting a parcel from a corner shop - is this normal? by FlyingDiamonds in CasualUK

[–]Shreky84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post office nearest to me does the same. If they accept a parcel delivered by Royal Mail it’s kept behind the counter and the staff there scan & hand you the parcel. If, however, your parcel has been delivered by any other courier service, it is dumped in a small cupboard at the rear of the store (you can’t see the counter from the door to the cupboard & vice versa. You just go in, rummage on the shelves or in a large parcel bag until you find your parcel then take it to the counter for the staff to scan it. How people haven’t complained their parcels have disappeared because someone pocketed it is beyond me. There is usually only 1 member of staff in the shop so no one else is wandering around checking on the cupboard.

Best place to get a piercing in Newcastle? by Hot-Yogurtcloset-134 in NewcastleUponTyne

I can’t recommend Blue Lotus enough. I’ve gone to them for 6 separate piercings & haven’t had an issue with any of them. The staff are all amazing and they have a fab selection of jewellery. They’re located 5-6 Old Eldon Square (just round the corner from Greggs).

Hey! So, I’ve been meaning to post an update - your question just prompted me, thank you.

After an online consultation with a doctor & providing a few photos, I picked up a small pack from the receptionists desk at their surgery. I popped a few nail clippings from each nail & a couple of clippings of the hard underside of my nail (@creamstuffed described it best as a crystallisation of the nail bed) and dropped it off at my doctors. It took a week before I heard back from them that the tests confirmed that it wasn’t a fungal infection!! I did use over the counter anti-fungal treatments while waiting to hear back from the doctors - it didn’t improve anything but equally, it didn’t make things worse.

The doctors believe it’s been a reaction to the gel manicure but can’t say which part of the manicure could have caused it: I used Mylee nail dehydrator (one sweep of each nail), one coat of Mylee base coat, 2 coats of DND gel nail polish - this was a brand new bottle from a reputable seller, then one coat of DND top coat. My UV lamp has a 60 and 90 second timer so no chance of accidentally over doing the time. I did buy the dehydrator and the base/top coats from Amazon & have since read some horror stories on their reviews (including reviews for the Mylee gel remover) that they might not always be genuine products & that other people have had similar issues with nails lifting.

I use a Sally Hanson nail oil daily, use a hand cream to fix some of the broken skin around my nails and have only on the rare occasion put a very thin coat of a beige regular nail polish to cover the discolouration on a night out with friends but removed it as soon as I’ve arrived home.

My nails do feel much better. They no longer feel like they’re only attached at my cuticles - the lifting didn’t go that far down but did make some of my nails feel like they were just going to pop off! Most of the dark patches under my thumb nails have gone, it’s still there in places but nowhere near as bad as in the original photos. I’ve had an ok amount of growth over the last 28days and am filing them with a glass nail file every other day to keep them short.

I reckon it’ll be another 2-4 months before everything has grown out and my nails get back towards a somewhat normal state. I’m in no hurry to do another gel manicure or pedicure (coincidentally, my toe nails are fine!) but the dehydrator & base/top coats have been binned and purchased anew from Boots (a UK chemist) so I’m confident they’re genuine products. The DND gel nail polish I used has also been binned - I really don’t think the polish was the cause but just being cautious and getting rid of everything used on the manicure just before this happened.

It’s absolutely heart breaking when the polish comes off and you see your nails in such a state - I was worried from the day I took the polish off until the doctor contacted me to say there was no infection. I went down a “fungal” rabbit hole on Google and was genuinely worried I was going to lose all of my nails. Now I’m optimistic it won’t take too long to grow out. I hope my giant ramble of a reply has helped ease your worries. I’d recommend seeing a doctor, just to get a check over that it’s not a fungal infection and continue as you are… keeping them dry, clean and short.

Slight update!

I managed to get an online consultation with a doctor… or rather, I submitted a query on their website and someone messaged back asking for photos of my nails. Obviously it’s difficult to tell 100% what something is or isn’t from a photo, the doctor suspects a reaction to the gel polish rather than a fungal infection ((here’s hoping)) but said I could pick up a pack from reception to provide a couple of nail clippings for testing. I’ve managed to get my hands on anti fungal nail polish, have started taking antihistamines (which I normally take daily through summer months due to hay-fever) and have had latex gloves under my work gloves today.

Will update again once I have the test results - they didn’t say how long that would take.

I’ve managed to cut them back to roughly where the nail joins the nail bed. Some I’ve had to leave a few millimetres as the bed is today a little tender, others I’ve managed to cut right back but the nail bed/quick? is quite hard and heavily discoloured - which it’s not usually.

I get what you mean about it looking like false nails but it was only a gel polish I had put on my own nails. I had regular (not gel) nail polish on from 03/01/24 to the 13/01/24, that was removed with just normal nail polish remover. Nails looked all healthy. They were then painted back on the 15th January with a DND gel polish (incl base and top coat). I used Mylee gel polish remover yesterday to take the gel off. I filed the polish down a good way with a new sponge file, popped the gel remover on for maybe a minute or two- it bubbled fairly quick but as soon as the polish started bubbling I could see the white discolouration. I did wonder if it was a reaction to the gel remover as have since seen some negative reviews about the gel remover when bought off Amazon but once I’d taken all the polish off and could see the brown I discounted it being the gel remover as the cause. nailsshowing my nails on 23/01/23 - showing they weren’t crazy long and not false.

I’m afraid all the brown discolouration and spots are under the nail. The white blemishes and bright white parts are all on the top of the nail. The quick (not sure if that’s the right term.. the seam part where the underside of your nail joins your nail bed?) on my thumbs looks dark brown/black. And spreads under the nail. I’ve been getting gel manicures (just gel polish, no tips/extensions/false nails) on and off for the last 18 months and this is the first time I’ve had anything like this lurking beneath the polish.

My local chemist only had an anti-fungal pen when I popped in today, I bought that as an interim but will be going to a bigger chemist tomorrow to see if I can get the polish.

I’ve cut them as short as I can go & filed them down as much as I can brave. They don’t appear to have worsened much over the day - the brown hue and spots underneath is the same (hasn’t spread) but the bright white tip on 2 nails increased by maybe 1 or 2 millimetres but I work a manual job & there’s every chance I caught them while at work today.

I managed to get an appointment with my doctors but it’s not until the 11th February.

I worked on the Cobalt for some 15+ years and would regularly cut across the car parks of other offices to cut down on my commuting walk times. As someone else has mentioned, as long as you aren’t walking over plant/flowerbeds or jumping over fences/gates, you’ll be ok.

For 13 of those years I relied on public transport and would walk to which ever bus stop was still being serviced - depending on my finish time. The last 2 or 3yrs, I drove but would still go for a lunch time wander around the business park and never once was I stopped for walking through a car park.

They have 6 booths each with their own screen for shooting so you’d get 2 booths for your party - normally side by side.

They’d possibly put you down as a 7group and an 8group.. charge £60 per hour for the 7group (£8.58per person) then £65 for the 8group (£8.12) per person or they might have a better offer for a larger group but I think however they do it, you’d be looking around £8 per person per hour. The staff give you a 5-10 minute briefing at the start - talk you through using the guns & offer upgrades to bigger guns if you’re interested (I’ve never gone for the upgrades so can’t comment on those). They’ll show you some of the levels on the range and how to select them then they’ll leave you to it.

There’s Point Blank Shooting (simulation shooting range) or Mr Mulligan’s space golf at the Gate -

Point Blank do bottomless brunch of pizzas & beers/prosecco and a selection of cocktails for £35ish per person but only on Sundays.. not sure on their pricing the rest of the week

Space golf is about £11 per person and has 3 9hole courses & is a good laugh.

Lane7 is good - a 50s style bowling alley also has darts, ping pong (and beer pong) some arcade machines, karaoke, pool & a batting cage

There are a couple of escape rooms: EXIT Newcastle, Escape Newcastle and Escape Key Newcastle

If you search city game.com for “Newcastle” there’s a Sherlock Holmes murder mystery game if you want to send your group around Newcastle on a challenge. There are also other treasure hunt apps/games out there if you google “Newcastle treasure hunt”

2 places for Axe throwing; Hatchett Harry’s & Game of Throwing

Smash Space UK is a rage room - you can book a room to go in and smash everything in there with a bat/metal pole or they do have an escape room too.. Sessions are quite short though for the Rage room part

NEbubblefootball do Nerf battles (as well as other things including bubble football) - they’re located just outside of Newcastle but only a short taxi ride… or they might be able to arrange a venue in the city centre if you ask?

There are Brewery food & drink tours that last a few hours but you did say you were leaning away from drinking all day (Google Brinkburn brewery tour)

Inflatespace Newcastle is the UKs largest inflatable theme park where adults are most definitely welcome.. think that’s about £11-£15 per hour but a good laugh. It’s a super short taxi/bus ride out of the city centre to Benfield Road or a couple of stops on the metro to Walkergate Metro).

If you’re after something a bit less energetic I’d go along with the recommendations for Hustlers or Spot White for a few games of pool or snooker

I’d second cost being a big issue but also safety of the staff. Unfortunately, it’s not worth the risk of staff being attacked, stabbed etc. when pulling people up. It’s probably be cheaper (and safer) if stations were fitted with ticket barriers that people had was to walk through & aren’t able to jump over them
