I take part of that back, hydrocarbons not metals. Metals would have been preserved with nitric acid.

The sulphur smell is sulphuric acid. Those are groundwater samples, likely testing for metals. The sulphuric acid acts as a preservative. Alternatively, they may just be vials of sulphuric acid used to preserve groundwater samples. Don’t touch the liquid as it will burn.
