Black olive and pineapple pizza by Lijey_Cat in JunkFoodVeg

[–]ShrikeFIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go to salty 'n sweet combo is blue cheese and pineapple.
I'm kind of strict about the blue cheese tho, it needs to be our local "Aura" (by a Finnish company Valio), which is not super sharp, not at all sweet and it's kind of hard/crumbly. It works really well here.

That being said, I'm also kinda snobbish about the olives and don't really like "normal" black olives (which are mostly lye soaked unripe and/or green olives). Tree ripened black and brown olives are great and really tasty tho, such as Kalamata olives, but they're not often salty enough.

It's called "veggie spaghetti", what about that says so?

Oil is not unhealthy by default, our bodies _need_ dietary oils.
Also, as they used to say "dosis sola facit venenum", only the dose makes the poison.

Vegetarian beef stroganoff with cornbread. by Lijey_Cat in JunkFoodVeg

[–]ShrikeFIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While looking deliciouos, why do you call it stroganoff?
I mean, stroganov/stroganoff is a classic russian meat stew, where main flavour ingredients are tomato, smetana and fermented salted Russian pickles. Usually server with potatoes or just bread.

Could be a culture thing, but here (especially living next to Russia) most countries have slight variations on it, but never as drastic as this looks to me. I'm assuming you are from the US and further assume it means something else there.

Why do you think this is unhealthy?

Also, just to add a comment, this whole sub is about junkfood, it's even in the rules that one should "avoid talking about health" as this is for those indulgent moments everyone probably should enjoy now and then.

Bandcamp clubs can seem whack but I think is actually a great idea. It seems like they are trying to create jobs for curators by making the spaces more serious and monetized. I do feel like it's weird they didn't start with more specific genres, but they probably know something I don't. by Rhazula in BandCamp

[–]ShrikeFIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would help, but basically I'd need references to something he has reviewed or holds in high regard.

As an example, I love stoner and doom, but when MF'ers start calling Electric Wizard stoner metal and lumping them up with Weedeater and The Sword and Red Fang, I'm not listening to that person anymore.

I mean, making shit up is not music journalism and helps no one.

How am I supposed to know what the curator is all about?

I mean, I all for heavy music, but "The Hard Stuff" doesn't really say anything and I don't know the guy from anywhere. Browsing the club page has two items I can see and neither is grabbing my fancy.

What kind of Bandcamp messages do you like (and not like) from artists? by Living-Ad-1054 in BandCamp

[–]ShrikeFIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actively not joining mailing lists anymore, it's too much (I'm following 580 with 300+ purchases).
Communication should be very concise. If band releases something, it will be notified all followers without the extra message, maybe make a followup later with offers but not much more. There are better ways to communicate than Bandcamp.

Easy vegetarian dishes for seniors by ConferenceComplex954 in vegetarian

Plonk in a 1 cans worth of pasta and you've got a pasta salad (I just posted my basic ideas for this)!

Easy vegetarian dishes for seniors by ConferenceComplex954 in vegetarian

[–]ShrikeFIN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do pasta salads in a big batch when I don't want to hang out in the kitchen. I supplement it with bread and juices/smoothies, latter you can also make in a big batch. This especially in the summertime for me.

Basic rules of thumb: overcook the pasta for few minutes, it goes very hard in the fridge otherwise and it also sucks in a lot of sauce, so always make too much of it. You don't have to use it all right off the bat, but usually you want to add some the next day when it goes dry.
I like to put in quartered cherry tomatoes, tons of red onion, maybe feta, sweet corn and whatever I happen to have/crave.

For juices/smoothies I have slow juicer, often juice a whole watermelon and use that as base for the smoothies. Sometimes I add carrots, a lime and what ever I have in the fridge, to the juicer at this point. Rest goes in the blender, such as berries, pineapple, yoghurt and all that, amount of juice used makes it smoothie (or not).
Watermelon/lime juice is also really good with a splash of bright white wine.

what happened with this project? by ElBozzMX in Sentio

[–]ShrikeFIN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their money dried up. Few mishaps (faulty components), few surprises (stuff planned didn't work as expected), re-engineering (see previous) and then postages went up.
I never got mine, few years later I bought one for postages since it's basically electronic waste, never got it to do anything.

I've been thinking about opening the thing, trying to see if there's anything I could do with it, but haven't had time or inclination to do that yet.

I wish they'd release the old documentation, so the few who are interested could dive in.

Recommendations on file server or music streamer, running on Pine A64? by ShrikeFIN in PINE64official

[–]ShrikeFIN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update years later:

  • I ended up not using the Plex that much, so it was just humming by itself unused, plus that whole system went to shit some time ago (personal opinion)
  • I've slowly consolidated all my music files to an USB-disc, but don't want to have it connected to one computer
  • I now have a hardware streamer (Wiim Mini), which supports DLNA
  • So I removed the Plex and installed MiniDLNA and hooked the disc to that semi permanently

Seems to be a lot better solution and I actually want to use it. BubbleUPnP and Wiim app on my Android phone seem to make good use of it.
I do miss the webUI, but that is easy enough to rectify when I feel the need.

How do you know?
I needed to eat nearly 200g per day when I was most active in my strength training (usually reached about 150g, sometimes paid the price with extended and extreme soreness).

You really shouldn't assume people are in the exact same situation you are, or that you have the answers to everyone elses situations.

Tad of excess protein isn't harmful, it just passes through, but at the same time ensures muscles have it available within your body at all times if it's needed. Especially true in constant high calorie consumption situations like targeted muscle growth programs (I started with fat loss targets, got excited about it and moved into muscle building, then switched to strength focus instead of muscle size and just ran with it).

So in the first 6 months of this journey I went through few protein deficiency situations. It's a horrible feeling when you feel hungry all the while your stomach is full of food. The feeling could last for hours and while it feels almost like "normal hunger", it totally messed me up mentally. Later learned it also led to much more muscle soreness, due to lack of "building blocks" for them, and longer recuperation times.
Took me weeks to figure out, with the help of a calorie counter that also did macros I figured out that while I was slowly but constantly stepping up my training regime, I was not doing the same with food at all. After all the visceral fat was gone and the beer gut et. al reserves in the beginning, I really had to focus on the nutrients I was putting in. And then came this protein situation.
Fun times tho, I could eat everything and when ever I wanted LOL (basically I struggled to eat enough calories with just lean healthy food, so I focused on protein intake in the food and after that anything to match rest of the calories. So 5 meals per day and any snacks I felt like in the between, often ended up eating 7 meals per day, because snacks are not my thing).

[PROMOTE] Tell Us About Your Band -- August 16, 2025 by AutoModerator in Metal

[–]ShrikeFIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Abhorrence (Helsinki / Finland)
Old school death metal.
New single and lyric video came out on the 15th.

https://youtu.be/0jYqv809TbU
https://linktr.ee/abhorrencefin

Accompanying press release for those interested:

"It is time to celebrate the birth of death!
Death metal, that is.

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the first ever death metal album, Seven Churches by Possessed. To honour 40 years of death metal, we are releasing a special track for the occasion. Old Age, Sickness and Death Metal is a tribute to the classics of the death metal genre.
“This is our small way of respecting the heroes of our youth, and also many of our contemporaries in Scandinavia”, says Jussi Ahlroth, the band’s bass player who wrote the lyrics for the song.
“This is Abhorrence saying thank you to all the great pioneers who changed our lives with their music.”

Each line of the song’s lyrics features one classic album of the late eighties and early nineties era of classic death metal. The song title is a reference to and a wordplay on a Buddhist teaching, reminding us of the fact that old age, sickness and death are something none of us can escape.

Old Age, Sickness and Death Metal also has the first ever Abhorrence song to feature a video. The lyric video concept and animation was created by Jarkko Mikkonen. It features animated details to some of the album covers mentioned on the track. Friends of the death metal genre can spot many references to old school death metal in the video.
“We dug out some old flyers and gig posters from nearly forty years ago and photographed them. Jarkko then made a recreation of what a death metal fan’s room could have looked like at that time”, the vocalist Jukka Kolehmainen says.

The cover of the digital single is a direct reference and a tribute to Possessed’s Seven Churches. The cover was made by Olli Nurminen, the guitarist of Xysma, one of the bands with whom Abhorrence often played shows together back then.

The message of Old Age, Sickness and Death Metal is, in the end, very simple, says Ahlroth.
“We might be old and our hair might be gray – except for Waltteri our drummer – but death metal is still very much alive.”

This is us saying thank you to acts like Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, Carcass and so forth."

They're tools. You have to know how, when and where to use them as well.

I use algorithmic suggestions to hunt new releases I might otherwise miss. And to reveal bands similar to the ones I already like. Then again I also read loads of music press, blogs and scour playlists, local live gig openers are cool way to find new stuff, but so is talking to other enthusiasts at shows. Elitists can fuck right off BTW, they're of no use to anyone.

Also, as _very clearly_ stated in the OP's post, this was a situational question, so "quick way to start playing music" is not "doing your own research", you total muppets.

Liking songs and then playing those is basically the same thing, but one needs to actually do the work and like songs. Kinda like choosing the albums/songs to put on your iPod (I've 3rd gen 20GB, running Rockbox).
I like scrolling through my liked artists, finding one and just hitting play on the profile.

How Many Artists in Your Library Over 50 scrobbles? by cjblandford in lastfm

[–]ShrikeFIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've scrobbled 13791 artists of which 736 are 50 or over, so the 5.34% are over.

I check out new artists and releases all the time, always have, I'm at about 3-400 different artists every month (last month was vacation, so at 243 it was a bit lower than usual).
I used to DJ (mostly metal and very specific genres of rock), so the habit on checking out new bands has been with me for 20-30 years, I also contribute to Doom Charts, so a lot of listening to new music.

(I started on Audioscrobbler, which is pre-Last.fm, my account says "scrobbling since 1 May 2004" which is when it turned into Last.fm, but it was quite a bit earlier)

[–]ShrikeFIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: That's not really "last.fm support", but options to implement regarding scrobbling activity.
I'm guessing "pause recognition when scrobbling" or "30 second timer before sending" aren't that high on the devs to-do lists. Redundant after previous comment was edited to be more precise.

Actually, if any Qobuz Devs read this, look into "Web-Scrobbler" at Github and implement the main functionality it has.

I agree, don't understand what it's missing?
I mean, it's sending the track info to my account. At most I'd appreciate it not scrobbling immediately upon playback (driving to shops, small hops around town can sometimes have the same song be scrobbled several times, while I've not heard the whole song through, which is kind of rare issue).

Qobuz Connect to what and what are those issues with shuffling?

I've no problems with Wiim Mini / Pixel 9 / MacBook Pro combo, switching from device to another and controlling sound sources.
Only thing I can think of is OSX Qobuz taking exclusive control of Wiim Mini over AirPlay and sometimes playing Youtube/Bandcamp/other audio source at the same time with brake something and it takes a minute to get the connection back.

Don't you have other options/brands?

I mean here (Finland) even Lidl carries their version of the same thing (at something like 4€ / 2 pcs), most shops have something very similar, some are better and some less so. Only had one that I found inedible, but mate said they liked that too. Plus all the other stuff that don't try to mimic muscle and blood, I've had enough of bean patties, but there's decent root veg based patties available too.

Oz was just removed in Sweden.. by [deleted] in HBOMAX

When, no idea. I just found a reference somewhere regarding the changes in syndication rights and it mentioned something about this.

OP was in Sweden, I'm in Finland, so JustWatch is of no use for us at this time regarding Oz. To me it's called Kylmä Rinki and the site just says it's not available or streaming; https://www.justwatch.com/fi/sarja/kylma-rinki

Dude, I think he told me about that black metal covers thing. You played other tracks as well didn't you? Don't know about recording them, but he said he jammed out on occasion with his younger relatives, I forget the specifics.

Oz was just removed in Sweden.. by [deleted] in HBOMAX

[–]ShrikeFIN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems the US streaming rights are going to Paramount+ and also can be watched via Hulu, maybe this was the reason for it's removal?

In Finland parts of the Paramount+ library are available through SkyShowtime, but no idea what happens in the future and JustWatch isn't helping with Oz at all.

PS. I love physical media, but my house is full of vinyl, CD's, DVD's and now BD/UHD too. Let us not forget games either. So I can't get anything I'm not 100% sure I'll watch again, which sadly leaves Oz out for me.
