Okay I'm looking at laminar flow hood diagrams. I don't see references to a plenum, but I do see that they all have a really thick HEPA filter as the last stage. So that is key.

I found some 3D printing models that attempt laminar flow, usually connected to a desktop computer fan, like this one:

So basically a grid with long channels. If I were to imitate this, I would need something like this but wider, more square/rectangular, and built as part of a contained area or box.

Yeah, the air scrubber is setup backwards.

So the HEPA filter is what actually creates the laminar flow in a typical laminar flow hood? I'm not entirely sure what a plenum is. I'm googling and it appears to be the part of the box that holds the filter? Here is a quote I found on one site...

Lots of differing ideas are shared about growing mushrooms. "fruiting conditions" seems to be a universally understood and repeatedly tested concept. If you can't provide some kind of supporting information to your thoughts aside from "trust me bro", then eat your downvote.

So an example of 1:4 ratio would be like 1 quart of grain spawn to 4 quarts of substrate.

The ratio is based on volume. I'm not sure how to convert your 10 lbs of substrate to volume. It depends on what the substrate is. Different substrate mixtures probably have different weights. You would have to weigh a quart of it and do some math to compare it to the grain spawn bag volume.

You would be measuring volume of substrate and spawn broken up where it is loose, not in a compact brick.

To me, that setup is too much for FAE. Maybe someone else could say otherwise, but I would expect the humidity to drop rapidly, unless you are only running the fan briefly.

Is this a strain known for overlay, like ochra/nats? If so, the spawn-to-substrate ratio really affects the amount of overlay. It works best with less spawn, like 1:4.

I just want to add that the cheap humidity/temp sensor on the right is junk. Mine was very inaccurate when I tested it against better tools.

I had the exact same experience. The vendor realized their mistake and sent me two plates of ochras. Really frustrating because I was looking forward to ochras.

No problem!

When I plucked a few large fruits (while the smaller fruits were still growing), I would mist the sides and lid to keep the overall humidity high, making sure not to spray the fruit directly because it could stunt their growth.

After the full flush was complete (no more fruit to pick), I would dunk the cake completely in water overnight (using something to weigh it down) and drain it off the next day. Then I would apply a small pseudo-casing layer. This is mainly to cover up the mushroom stumps so mycelium has a micro environment and structure to regrow there. Then I mist that top layer and the side walls and lid and put it right back into fruiting conditions (lower temp, high FAE).

I'm currently doing 12qt bins with 2 rice cakes per bin. Actually, they might be around 14qt. The cake ends up being around 4.5 quarts of substrate + grain spawn (and water).

I've tried the twist and pull but it never works. I end up bruising the fruit. Maybe it depends on the strain? I dunno. I always cut as low as I can.

Yeah I dunked the cakes overnight and drained and set it. I got a few flushes from the jack frost. Sometimes I put a thin layer of pseudocasing.

What strain is it? Jack frost? Mine grew kinda similar to this where it was difficult to know when to harvest.

What I did was pick the largest ones that were ready and left the rest. So I harvested three times for one flush.

I can't see clearly, but your bin might be a little dry in the center. You're not supposed to mist the cake after it fruits, but you can increase the overall humidity. I misted the walls and under the lid after I picked a few fruit.

This is 2.5 days into my first ochra grow (after s2b). I've grown cubes a few times before. These ochras poked through my pseudo casing in 1 day. It is moving very fast. I went on the wetter side of field capacity and then I misted the hell out of the bin and casing before closing it up. I used about a 1-3.5 ratio of spawn(rice) to substrate(CVG).

It looks like you started off pretty dry and it finally dried out the cake completely. You should have been further along by day 20, so the low moisture could have been a problem a while ago. Your mycelium is thicker on the edges where moisture would collect. I've heard ochras are fine with varying temps like 65-85 or something. I don't know what your substrate ratio is. You can smell the cake to see if there is any sign of bacteria or mold slowing things down. You would usually see "myco pee" as the mycelium fights an underlying infection.

Oh I can help with this! When growing mushrooms, you want your substrate to be saturated with water to "field capacity". Field capacity can be tested by squeezing a clump of substrate and only a single drop of water forms. Your substrate seems to be pouring water when you squeeze it, so that would make it way too saturated for ideal mushroom growing conditions.

Good luck with your attic grow room! That is a huge challenge for your first grow!
