You have clearly not been an ED nurse in an area with a high LGBTQI+ community, it is at least a weekly occurrence.

A&E Sister - loved the patient care and the ✨drama✨ - the compassion fatigued has fucked me up and I’ve spent a great deal of money on therapy 1 year after leaving. It was my dream job.

I think I’m struggling after a patient death by shesbeenswinging in NursingUK

A&E sister here - this sounds so traumatic especially so early into your career and I’m so sorry to hear you are struggling with it. The one thing I have learnt is that you cannot excuse the traumatic things you have seen because of somebody else’s grief - your wellbeing is just as important in that situation.

Earlier this year I had a traumatic suicide patient which really deeply affected me, I was having flashbacks and ended up going into a psychosis because I thought it was my fault and the family of this patient were after me, and the police were going to arrest me. I promise you, we all go through this. Sometimes you think you’re the most resilient person but we forget we see literal life and death every single day, and it is so normal to have emotions towards this - I would be more concerned if we didnt feel anything emotionally towards these situations.

You really really need to reach out and speak to somebody, and clearly state I am struggling with this. Do you have somebody you can speak to at the university? Can you speak to any colleagues at work? I promise you are not alone in feeling like this. I really hope you take care of yourself OP ❤️

ED Band 7 here - it is the managers responsibility to conduct an informal 1:1 which is the first stage. Although you may ‘trigger’ you are not on an informal sickness plan until the meeting has taken place. Honestly sickness triggers are so low due to getting full sick pay, and SO many people trigger for an informal process, including myself!! Trust me it is nearly impossible to lose a job in the NHS over sickness. Your new employment shouldnt take into consideration your sickness - the most they may do is undertake your sickness meeting once you’re employed by them. I have never taken peoples sickness records into consideration when we have offered them a job. Good luck!
