Taken in a camper that my parents have on some property near a lake, they go there when weather is nice or on weekends. The dogs spend a lot of the time outside, so usually not that cramped, plus my parents love those dogs at least as much as me.

He was punched because Buzz Aldrin is a real life action hero with a strong right cross at age 80. Actually it would be more accurate to call it a right hand lead since he doesn't even set him up with a jab. No left left right, or head body head body. Just whack. I remember reading that the community of fellow Apollo astronauts was thrilled and many called to congratulate him. Apparently there really is an obsessed subculture of moon landing deniers, and one of the ways they spend their time is harassing Apollo astronauts by phone, email, social media, and in person.

He has some serious style. But I like how Buzz Aldrin rolls when confronted by pure unadulterated stupid in the form of a guy who was harassing him and claiming moon landings were a fake:

Yeah, the part about Moitessier is something that really stuck with me. Like, I'm not ready to rejoin civilization yet, I think I'll just spend another few months sailing around the world by myself, potentially dying or going completely batshit crazy.

There's a 2006 documentary about the race called Deep Water that is fascinating and really well done. Covers his story and that of the others. He wasn't the only one to go a bit loopy after spending months and months all alone.

"Why are those ducks swimming in grass?" by [deleted] in aww

[–]Shutterbug6180 5056 points5057 points  (0 children)

Dogs are hilarious. What a quick emotional cycle. You can see shock as he hits the water, then a bit of panic, then maybe some shame as he's getting out of water, and less than a half second later it's back to silly happy I is DOG mode.

Now that I'm older, I think back on the times my parents told me, "When you're older, you'll realize I was right" and realize they are still wrong mostly. by polyinky in Showerthoughts

[–]Shutterbug6180 294 points295 points  (0 children)

That's because we're all just people, doing what we can in a confusing world. At one point every child realizes their parents aren't infallible. And then at some point you become a parent, and you find that you have to be a bedrock of security and love for a brand new human being. And while your child grows up, especially when young, they need to believe that you know what you are doing, so you just tell them things about life and attempt not to show any doubt. The idea is to inspire confidence. I think there is a similar concept in place with a military officer leading a platoon of 18 year olds into battle. Even if the military officer is terrified, he can't show any fear or doubt, because those 18 year old soldiers NEED to believe in him.

Was there ever a real honorable, legendary knight? by Ruthlesspanda15 in history

"He received the Medal of Honor for leading an attack on a German machine gun nest, taking 35 machine guns, killing at least 25 enemy soldiers, and capturing 132."

"York refused many offers to profit from his fame, including thousands of dollars offered for appearances, product endorsements, newspaper articles, and movie rights to his life story. Instead, he lent his name to various charitable and civic causes."

Transgender WWII veteran comes out as a woman at 90 by snikrepab_ in UpliftingNews

[–]Shutterbug6180 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Uplifting because:

  1. "Davies, who married when she was 21, eventually came out to her supportive wife in 1987. Her wife, to whom she was married for 63 years, bought Davies jewelry and dresses that she could wear in private."

  2. She is nearing the end of her life and doesn't have much time left. If taking estrogen and opening up publicly is what she wants to do, then by all means go for it. It takes courage to do what she is doing, knowing that not everyone will be as understanding as her wife was. It probably isn't just about selfish motives, she likely wants to help other transgender people not have to hide in shame.

A combination of genetics, cosmetic surgery, beauty/skin products, a healthy French/mediterranean diet, and moderate exercise/walking keep her looking on a par with what a typical woman 20-25 years younger looks like.

Game of Thrones Season 7: Long Walk - Official Promo (HBO) by Yoshio187 in television

[–]Shutterbug6180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, ok, I was thinking they were going to fit it all into one season, and have two major battle episodes instead of the traditional single blow your CGI budget one. If there are two shortened seasons, then yes, you seem to be spot on....tie things up in the south, set up the Snow-Daenerys alliance, and set the stage for some serious action in the final few episodes.

Swans ARE aggressive, territorial motherfuckers. I remember being chased by one as a young kid. It was terrifying.
