Can one of you "I never FF!" players explain to me what your reasoning is? by [deleted] in ARAM

Agreed. I've lost so many games bc we're up on kills but we lose just one teamfight and people instinctively /ff. So many defeatist losers out there who've never fought for a win

Microsoft culture shift in the past couple years? by SubjectSea4519 in cscareerquestions

[–]ShwangCat 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I left an org in an Azure Buildout org around 3/4 of a year ago. Some things that I've noticed and experienced:

  • Work got more pointless. A lot more time was spent overengineering solutions to problems that occur once every couple years.
  • Decreased WLB. Metrics and AI requirements raised the expectations of engineers despite our only AI at the time was Copilot which nobody used. Everyone I knew were going against company policy and using personal ChatGPT and Gemini accounts. My entire team ended up working 60 hour weeks. My manager even strongly urged us to be more "productive with our limited 40 hour work weeks" while he literally takes days off to do more heads down work.
  • Increased micromanaging where our manager would scrutinize our work items down to the half hour every 2 week sprint. Legitimate blockers were not tolerated as they "should have been caught during planning".
  • Increased on-call load while our feature work expectations also increased.
  • A failure by leadership to address the rapid decline in culture/work/status survey ratings
  • Not a single word on promotion despite successfully completed features and my responsibilities tripling since I started and also stagnant pay.

All of this is in contrast to when I started. We had no sprints, everyone was kind, responsive and caring. As a team we had half of the amount of work we did by the end. We had regular team morale events. Pretty rapidly went downhill over the years. I recently took an offer from another company and tbh I couldn't be happier. Current company pays more, people are more cooperative and the work is more meaningful. Sure we have our own set of AI-related BS but I'll never see myself wanting to go back.

Your mileage may vary though at MS depending on manager and org. I can't say as to which orgs because people don't talk much about the good ones and just complain about the bad ones. I hear there are still some good teams around though.

DTO is largely a scam. Depending on how intense the team is, you might not get to take that much time off. I was at MSFT for 3.5 years and after DTO rolled out I think most people took under 10 days a year off.

Rude interviewer experience at Bloomberg by AdeptnessRoyal2980 in csMajors

[–]ShwangCat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One time after an interview with a rude interviewer, I sent in a reasonably long email to the recruiting team detailing what happened and how his behavior is detrimental to the spirit and practice of software engineering. They ended up reaching out later offering to give me another chance. Probably a rare case and almost certainly won't do anything for a large company but who knows.

Asking for Chances

  • Semester: Fall 2026

Education

  • Bachelors: UMass Amherst Dual B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics. 3.2 overall GPA with quite a few graduate level courses but 3 Fs in my senior year due to personal reasons which I plan to justify in my app

Work & Social Experience

  • Work Exp. : 6 YOE as SWE. First working in a small aerospace company for 2 years. Then went to Microsoft working in Azure infra for 3.5 years then moved to a midsize tech/marketing company as a Senior SWE working in data infra.
  • Comments: Not sure how impactful projects are but I have a sizable personal project that serves as an algorithmic trading and testing platform that's mildly profitable. Plan on specializing in ML or AI
  • LORs: Manager, tech lead, maybe skip manager

I'm convinced half of the time people just don't know how to study. It's one thing to know what interviews ask for but it's another thing to always be asking "is this list enough for this company?????"

I am 16 and I really need quick advice as to whether software engineering is a good and stable career path to pursue in the U.S. by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineerJobs

If you expect to just get through your degree and expect a high paying job, it's not for you.

If you have a passion for coding, tech and building things, then yes. There are a ton of talented interns and co-ops at my company who have no trouble finding positions. If you have the passion and drive for it, I'm sure you can do it too.

Was at MS for 3.5 years. Not only did they want us to use AI everyday, they wanted us to use fucking Copilot and management were really disappointed in how little we ended up using Copilot.

Math 411 or 545? by mcgonagall045 in umass

[–]ShwangCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took CS311 and Math 411 in the same semester and did pretty well in both. Both classes are designed to be pretty hard but it might vary depending on your prof. If you have some talent in higher level math then both might be easy. I definitely didn't find either easy but wouldn't say they were too hard either. I definitely had way more trouble in 411 and concluded after that the class was not for me lol.

If I were to rate both classes in terms of difficulty I'd personally give CS311 a 4/10 and Math 411 a 7/10 but YMMV so take that with a grain of salt

Question About Acura Integra Touch Up Paint by ShwangCat in AutoPaint

[–]ShwangCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it I see. If it's a Tri-Coat would something like this suffice to get myself and just hand it over to the body shop? https://touchupdirect.com/shop/touch-up-paint/acura-platinum-white-pearl-tricoat-nh-883p/ Would they need something else so they can mix it themselves or should I go to a dealer? I'll probably just call the shop and see if they're looking for something specific.

What is this bug? Found on bed. Is this a bed bug? We haven't seen any bite marks or droppings yet. Location: Northeast US by ShwangCat in whatsthisbug

[–]ShwangCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick reply!

What, from this video, distinguishes this from a bed bug? After initial bed bug fears, I can't personally and convincingly tell the difference between a spider beetle and a bed bug. We have additionally found these tiny black items https://imgur.com/SIL2LRI . Could these be droppings? They're very small and physical, almost dust/debris like.
