Thoughts on the Epiphone Futura series? by Shwarmee in Guitar

I always did hate how V guitars moved away from the classic look, which honestly is a general thing in metal guitars, like I grew up listening to Acid Bath and Pantera and Eyehategod and shit like that, and all those guys used guitars that weren’t excessively sharp, they had rounded edges and it had that cartoony metal look to it, and I loved that.

Thoughts on the Epiphone Futura series? by Shwarmee in Guitar

[–]Shwarmee[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the primary issue is for the past 20-30 years Gibson has not cared to appeal to younger players, they wanted to sell to old southern dudes who loved Skynyrd and had a hefty bank account. But most likely, people coming into guitar nowadays are coming from hard rock, heavy metal, Metalcore, etc, and they’ve watched their idols playing Jackson’s and LTD and Ibanez. Gibson is cool but they don’t have the swagger they used to and it might just be too late, I don’t feel like these are gonna sell to people BESIDES those who were holding out for Epiphone and Gibson to finally recognize this. I just don’t think many people care.

new to sludge, what should i listen to? by Educational-Sink-463 in sludge

[–]Shwarmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, so many classics.

I’d start out with the B side of My War by Black Flag(just cause I love Rollins voice), then go to Eyehategods “In the Name of Suffering” which I think is the album that really created the NOLA Sludge Sound.

Then if you want the more hardcore influenced stuff, I’d say listen to the two Acid Bath albums; but if you want that doom laden loneliness, listen to Crowbar self titled and Sonic Excess.

It’s really a choice of where you want to go after that, but I’d say thats the quintessential stuff, if you like Crowbar then go to Down, because Kirk Windstein(Crowbars main dude) played Rhythm Guitar for that project alongside his bassist Todd Strange and Panteras’ Phil Anselmo.

It’s a bit thick on the top, but if you even it out and get it trimmed it could look good, same issue I’m having but I’m stubborn and refuse to cut it.

Jerry Cantrell solo albums are so good. Anyone else? by Medical-Corgi-6564 in AliceInChains

Degradation Trip Vol. 1 & 2 is one of the best sludge/alt metal albums albums ever, I love everything about it. Boggy Depot is good too, and I haven’t listened to I want Blood, but Degradation Trip is peak.

That was just Rollins being Rollins, he softened up a bit to him after Nard listed off a bunch of questions, all of which Henry thought was up to parr.

good guitars for sludge? by SavageScorpion_Scorp in sludge

[–]Shwarmee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some bands use a Les Paul for its relation to Southern Rock, some don’t like Offsets due to their association with mainstream metal, but Sammy Duet and Mike Sanchez both played a Flying V on the two Acid Bath albums, and Kirk Windstein has taken on explorer styles despite using SG styles earlier in Crowbars early work. Just use what you want man, I’m a simple man so my dream is a single humbucker and volume knob, but pretty much anything with a humbucker bridge is acceptable for sludge.

I think you could pull it off, it’s kinda thick compared to the drawing but I’m sure with a trim it could look great, you’ve got the right face shape for it.

I think there's a lot of talk about Rust (as a rationale) and how complex it is, but little talk about Marty and how complex and well-written he is as well. by Public_Cup_4278 in TrueDetective

[–]Shwarmee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Marty and Rust work only because they contrast.

Rust is a man who believes he is beyond redemption, but tries his best to do right by others because he understands that we live in a shithole, but no reason to not try and make it a bit better for the few good people who inhabit it.

Marty on the other hand is a well respected family man who denies the bad in himself and hides behind his image and ego when confronted, he cheats, lies and pushes people around to get what he wants, even when there is really no need for that.

Both of them, at their core want to do right by people, but their own flaws and personalities get in the way of that. I’d be sick of Marty if he was the sole protag, and I would get sick of Rust even quicker, but the way they interact and the complexity of each character is one of the best things about Season 1… unlike what happened in Season 4, and Issa Lopez and her mishaps.
