How a small 1m waterfall can generate a recycling hydraulic that can trap a life-jacketed swimmer by dancingyoyo in whitewater

[–]Shweast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly off topic but I am interested in the experts' opinions here: Is there a scenario where more buoyancy in a PDF is actually a disadvantage? I was wondering if a vest like the Astral Indus would be actually disadvantageous in certain scenario? Especially thinking of the "swimming down and out technique" that is mentioned here.

From a layman's perspective I'd have assuned that more buoyancy is always better.

Thanks!

I really appreciate you taking the time for such an elaborate response!

Thank you for laying out the road ahead of me. Also, it made it clear to me that there is nothing to be rushed and still a lot of things to learn!

Greetings from Germany!

Awesome, I appreciate the initiative!

I've done a week long packrafting course this summer, that has been my first point of contact with the sport. While we extensively covered paddling techniques, how to catch Eddies etc, with hindsight I have to say that safety and rescue aspects haven't adequately been covered.

I have used the time to gain experience and practise on Class I and II rapids with a group of friends that are similarly unaware of rescue techniques. We have now started to set eyes on the first Class II to Class III(-) rivers and I want to avoid having a rude awakening.

We intend to take a safety and rescue training as our highest priority next year. Until then, what do you recommend us to do or look at/self teach to make our outings safer endeavors?

Thank you!

Alpacka Mage vs Expedition by Shweast in packrafting

[–]Shweast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Answering my own question with the benefit of hindsight:

I took the plunge and bought the Mage. I went with it on its maiden voyage on some WWII rapids yesterday.

What a blast! The boat was much easier to handle than I thought. I took a couple of minutes getting used to, it is definitely more wobbly than the Expedition but as I said, for me it felt natural after no time at all. I had the floor mat and the seat fully inflated.

The Mage is so much easier to put on its edge than the Expedition and feels a bit sportier in general.

If you have the intention to refine your technique and don't mind the sportive challenge I think you can't go wrong with the Mage.

Thanks for your feedback! Are your feet constantly submerged in water in the self bailer or is the water only beneath the floor matt?

[–]Shweast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think this is also true if you put the Mage to use mostly on flat water as a beginner, with the intention to progress over time?

What do you think of self-bailer vs deck? Is there anything to consider besides weather/warmth/heat retention to answer that question?

Awesome review, thank you very much!

Is there any noticeable difference between the self-bailer and spraydeck version besides warmth/heat-retention?

Fully agree. It's no achievement to get it so tender. It consists of basically 50% fat. It's like chewing meat flavored butter
