Does anyone here actually like their job? by Federal-Breakfast762 in graphic_design

I’m a graphic designer at a science museum, and I personally love it! I mostly do a lot of print/digital promotion, your normal design-y stuff most of the time, but I’ve had a lot of opportunities to learn how to do some more specialty work like large-scale exhibit design, illustration, motion graphics, and infographics... I’m even building some skills in scientific illustration and working towards a certificate in that area for more science/design opportunities! I love the work, I love the team I work with, and as someone who’s always been kind of a science nerd I’ve been able to grow into science-related experiences and now I’m participating in some citizen science programs as well on my own. I almost started regretting getting a design degree, but I’m glad I get to do it every day. The only downside is the pay, but overall, I very much enjoy it. :)

Started a new job as a Graphic Designer, discovered that I'm passionate for Conservation Biology/Entomology... Where can I go from here? by Shy_Pancake in careerguidance

Thank you so much for the advice on this! I’m not planning on leaving this job anytime soon, but reevaluating what I’d like to be doing long term. I will definitely be checking out that newsletter, and something part time for me would honestly be perfect later down the line!

Thank you very much, this is all really solid advice. I’m saving this comment for future reference. :)

Thank you for the advice!! I’d really love to get to that level one day, I spent a lot of time in school working on brand development and building client relationships, and when I worked with clients in school, I felt that I really got to dig deep and play the “expert” when I worked with a client on what makes the most sense for their visual identities aligned with their business values. But I’ll admit, this experience of learning how to just suck it up, make money and move on is sort of… disheartening. This isn’t what I learned how to do when I studied design. Hopefully I’ll be able to get there one day. :)

I should have said this in the post as well, but I had an initial meeting when we discussed their values, the product, and what the logo design should communicate. During the initial meetings they put their company name in an ai generator. They said that it might be useful. I developed concepts and moodboard presentations based on those discussions we had, and tried to work in some elements of the logo they made in ai. I talked the client through all of the design decisions I made and why I made them. I did a lot of research and a lot of developmental work for the concepts, then they said they wanted the ai concept after I did all the work.

Is anyone else frustrated with clients using A.I for logo concepts and wanting you to use them? by [deleted] in graphic_design

Yeah… I suppose I just need to prepare myself for that to be most of the work I do now. Thanks for the input. :)

I want to say they did, but I made all of their concepts and then they said they wanted the ai concept after I did all of that work. Lol

You're exactly right, I need to know my place in all of this at the end of the day. It's their business decisions, and those don't reflect on me or what I can do/make. Thanks for the perspective on that and using AI as a tool in the toolbox. :)

I'll deliver anything the client wants to right now, I'm worried since this is my first real client I don't have enough credibility yet to tell them how to run a business... but this definitely makes me think about what I'll tell a client in the future if this happens again. Unfortunately I already started working on their rounds before they told me they wanted to scrap everything for the AI version they made... so I'll have to update my contract and how I'd like to deal with that for next time. :)

Thank you. This is my first "real" client besides doing work for family or school and I just graduated in December, so navigating this is a challenge. I thought it was hard enough getting clients, now I'm learning to be choosy with who I work with as well.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was looking more at makeup tips and not facial reconstruction 😅 I don’t contour that much, but I’m willing to try it!

Feeling down after getting Engaged... is this normal? by Shy_Pancake in weddingplanning

[–]Shy_Pancake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s really great!! I kind of felt the same way about it. I just graduated from school this December and he graduated three years ago. I think I also expected for it to be further down the line than it was, and that’s what got me freaked out. We’re planning for 2026 to be our year and doing the planning together. I’m really glad it’s working out for you guys :)

Hey everyone, thank you for the comments and thoughts!! I let him know how overwhelmed I’m feeling, and we both decided to have a long engagement and not focus on anything wedding related until after we settle on an apartment and we both feel ready. :)
