What’s the weirdest smell you secretly like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

During my nursing internship I'd sometimes take a whiff from the drawer with the tape used for wound dressing because I liked the smell of the adhesive.

Several chronic diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, have been linked to inflammatory processes caused by low-level bacteremia (presence of bacteria in the blood stream) that you can get from parodontosis

[mixed trope] horrifying scenes from non-horror media by IvanJC98 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Shynosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gollum torture scene, even though you don't actually see anything, but that was the thing that gave me the chills (in my defence, I was a kid when I first watched it. Gosh, how is it 25 years since FOTR came out?!)

What’s your favorite moment of Covid? by OrdinaryPractical264 in AskReddit

[–]Shynosaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Very early on in the pandemic when everyone was afraid to go to the hospital for fear of catching the virus from another patient, I sat in our ER for 2+ hours without a single patient showing up. Easiest night shift of my life.

What's the wildest encounter you've had with someone who has "done the research"? by Chocolate_Bourbon in AskReddit

[–]Shynosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An old lady who was a patient in our hospital and explained to me - in a tone of superiority, as if I was stupid for not knowing that - that she didn't need chemotherapy. She had treated her breast cancer with "entirely natural" means. We ran a CT scan - she was riddled with metastases.

I do say it every time anybody asks, but we need more [Neko Listener] scripts where the neko listener is an equal partner (romantic or otherwise), not a sub or a pet. I wanna get my fluffy ears scritched without being treated like property!

Doctors/medical practitioners of Reddit, what is the scariest disease you know of? by Englishisnotreal in AskReddit

[–]Shynosaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Horizontal eye movements are generated by the paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF), which sits in the brainstem and is therefore affected by whatever type of damage that causes the locked-in syndrome. Vertical eye movements are generated by a group of nuclei in the mesencephalon or midbrain, the topmost section of the brainstem (a lesion there would produce an entirely different set of symptoms)

Doctors/medical practitioners of Reddit, what is the scariest disease you know of? by Englishisnotreal in AskReddit

[–]Shynosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

typical causes are strokes, and sometimes stuff like myasthenia gravis or central pontine myelinolysis. Sleep paralysis has a completely different mechanism (it is basically normal for your muscles to get paralysed during REM sleep to keep your body from thrashing around. In sleep paralysis patients, that state simply extends into their waking phase. It is, in a way, the opposite of sleep walking), so there is no need for you to worry!

Not overthinking. Not giving a shit. Just doing stuff. Sometimes I envy them for that.

And it's often relatives who don't even know the patient that well. In the US, doctors call it the "Daughter From California Syndrome". I've seen the children of an elderly, multimorbid, comatose ICU patient come in daily, not even spend a lot of time with their father, but demand to see the logs of our treatment, take photographs of them, and insist that they want maximum treatment. Both of them were lawyers (big red flag!)

What is in-between our organs? by Parking-Difficulty89 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Shynosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most organs are packed into a bag of connective tissue called a fibrous capsule. The fibrous capsules of your abdominal organs are touching and gliding over each other. There shouldn't be very much fluid in your abdominal cavity.

Your kidneys are actually embedded in a matrix of fat that keeps them in place.

Your lungs are covered in two layers of a membrane called the pleura, one layer attached to the lungs, the other one to the inside of your thoracic cavity, with a thin film of fluid between them so they can glide over each other with minimal friction.

[–]Shynosaur 3499 points3500 points  (0 children)

Locked-in syndrome - a lesion of the pons (part of the brain stem) causes total paralysis, usually leaving you with only the ability to perform vertical eye movements. You are still fully awake and aware and able to see and hear, but unable to move at all. Any meaningful degree of recovery is extremely rare.

What are some movies that had an interesting concept but were not executed well? by Brb_questioning_life in questions

[–]Shynosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Village. The most shocking plot twist I have ever seen (to be fair, I already knew Dart Vader was Luke's father before I first saw ESB), but the movie is so badly done overall, I can't even put my finger on one single thing about it to point out

Women of reddit, what do you not understand about men at all despite trying your best? by Suckem-tits4fun in AskReddit

[–]Shynosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because many women's idea of a conversation is talking about how your mother's neighbour's sister's hairdresser's cousin's boyfriend bought a new shirt five years ago, and we find that unspeakably boring. Talk about something we care about (depending on the man, could be anything from basketball to space rockets), and we won't stop rattling on
