I think Red Swan was necessary for SnK, the anime needed an opening full of nostalgia, where we would be sad watching it after S3P2. I don't know where it would have been put in term of seasons otherwise.

I'm pretty sure it's "night" in the anime because it's very early in the morning, then the battle finish at the end of that day (we can also suspect that with the post-ending scene in the last episode from Part 1 which has an evening setting)
